I have the 380gr mold for the Lee REAL and was wondering if anyone has hunted any game with one of these CB`s.
My intentions are to drop a whitetail or mule deer with one of these puppies.
Thanks for sharing,

I have one. It isn't a tight fit in the bore of my 54 muzzleloader (Lyman GPR) so I don't use it. I find a 54 caliber roundball is plenty of whomp for deer. I still cast up a few now and then for friends. They like it.

I too have the GPR also in .54 but it strictly my PRB gun. I should`ve mentioned that the REAL`s will be used in both my TC Hawken & Renegade.

Killed my best deer with one in a 54 Renagade. They shot well for me and provide a lot of wallop.

if it is accurate should be fine , if a roundball will wack them the REAL should really flatten them , I took my first muzzle loader whitetail this fall with a425 gr Lyman 533476 over 80 GR of 2F equivalent triple 7 in a TC hawkens , I haven't chronographed this load but I would guess not any great amount over 1000fps at the muzzle , it was a long shot somewhere between 100 and 120 yards so it had probably dropped a fair bit in velocity , it still went through the neck and spine of a average NW ontario Doe 90-120 lbs range . I will be the first to admit I shouldn't have pulled the trigger I consider my hawkens a 100 yard or less hunting rifle. I think if you keep the ranges reasonable the REAL will drop a white tail like a bad habit. I have never hunted Mule deer so I can't comment on them with a .54 muzzleloader .
happy hunting

Huntsman,

The .54 will kill deer provided you know your gun, shoot within range. I've killed several whitetail deer with a .45 cal patch & round ball - approx 50 yds. They were VERY dead with a clean shot. Have used a .45 cal maxi ball also - that is very close to the REAL - use a GOOD lube, - you have PLENTY of "umph" for clean kills.

Watch the nipple & keep it clear - smoked deer :smile::smile:

I shot a mule deer with a T/C .54 Hawken using a 300 grain Lee REAL. Flatten is a good description. I've never seen another bullet that left internal organs on the external side of the deer.

:drinks: That's a good one Greg. My hunting partner uses it in his Renegade and I've seen a pig fly!:bigsmyl2:

I am sure it will work fine for deer. It worked great for me on a cow elk!

I have taken a few deer wit hthe 54 cal. round ball 230 grain and with 100 grains of goex 3f no need for conicals out to 100 yards
I like to use the conicals REALS in my 50 cal. does a tad better then the 170 +grain RB on larger body deer but the 50cal. rb will get the job done also again I use 100 grains of 3F blows 2 holes out to 75 yards right threw the boiler room.:Fire:

Good morning
A .53 Round Ball is more than enough for 250 pound deer. A boolit weighing near twice that is more than enough for bear.
Rereading Mr. Roberts fine old book about Muzzleloading stated that any .44 or .45 caliber rifle using 70-90 grains BP and a Boolit was plenty for bear. The .54 is quit a step up and will not disapoint you. Just be aware it will completely penetrate and probably dispatch whatever is on the exit side of the target.

I don't get good groups out of my lyman great plains flint lock with the 1:60 twist barrel but I do get good groups with the 1:32 twist barrel. I only shoot targets with it. It gets to cold here dureing muzzle loader season in northern Michigan, for the lyman, my jackie brown canoe gun is more reliable and I'm a good shot with a .62 cal 18 inch smoothbore at tree stand ranges. .600 round ball with 5 .32 buck shot balls ontop. very effective on does.....back to the lyman I think its the twist rate that makes the difference. any one that wants pics of the lyman with two barrels pm me and give anoffer I may sell it to get another jackie brown
