the
mold looked great right out of the box.
i was happy about that, nothing visibly wrong!(have heard some horror stories about lyman) very pleased. the mold started dropping good keepers after about 6 casts. i only did a short session tonight, about 60 boolits. i was very pleased with the results. 50 out of the 60 where all within 1 grain +/-. 172-173. the other 10 only varied about another half grain from that.WW with a little tin, hornady gascheck, sized to .311, and lubed with lars 50/50 (the red in the pic is some left over red rooster) 3031, H4895, and IMR4227 will be the test powders to see how well i can make it shoot. rifle is a rem. 788. wish me luck!!!!

Waco,

Let me know how those powders work out for you. I've been using 2400 with that boolit in my 788 with "average" results. I think it should shoot better than it does. My 311466 shoots worse, which surprises me. I thought it would shoot better than the 311041.

The 788 began shooting better when I began heat treating the boolits (that saga here: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=42870). This is not to say that you'll need to heat treat yours. I just got better results heat treating mine.

Regards,

Stew

I got a 311041 last fall, cast some from straight ww, Hornady checks, orange magic. Out of my 15" Contender in .308x444 I am getting 2-2 1/2" groups, using RL7. Good luck with yours. .30-30?

A classic design that shoots well in many different rifles. My mould is an older one ( 31141 ) and casts large - @ .313. I use it in my Model 788 carbine in 308 Win for deer hunting. The three powders you mentioned should work fine. My best load uses Varget - 34 grs gives me @ 1925 fps in my carbine.

This is a great cast boolit shooter.

Waco - Is your rifle a 308 Win? If so, start at 30 grs of Varget( 1740 fps in my rifle ). Also try 32 grs ( very good accuracy @ 1860 fps)

I found 34 grs to be an acceptable compromise of velocity and accuracy. Have fun!

Yep......... .308 indeed. Can't wait to try the new boolits in this one!
varget, and H4895 will be a must!

P.S.
how do you guys like my green stock?
you all know the 788 stocks leave something to be desired...
so i thought what the heck....sand her down and put some nice green on her.
she still shoots better than she looks!

Vly,

Why is the barrel so short on your 788? Mine is either 22 or 24 inch. Yours looks to be 18.5. Is it factory or cut short aftermarket?

Stew

Well, that gives me something else to so this weekend. I'll have to shoot some photos of my 788 .223 and post them. The stock was originally more blond than the one shown in Vly's photo. I hate blond stocks, so I went to the local hardware store and bought some spray paint. The stock is now painted brown with "avocado" green splotches for camo, with a Chevy Orange butt plate anti-skid pad made from high-temp silicone sealer used for car engine overhauls. I lost a couple of squirrels when the rifle slipped on my shoulder with the factory butt plate just as the trigger broke. I wrapped some clear plastic sheeting (about .015 thick) around the butt and filled it with the silicone, about 3/16 deep. When it cured, I removed the plastic sheeting and had a nice anti-skid coating on the butt plate. Nice thing about silicone sealer is that it remains pliant forever (almost). 20+ years later it's still as good as the day I applied it.

Stew

I have an old Lyman 31141 that has done well for me in .308.

Since I like IMR4227 that is what is usually under it ~ 18 to 22 grs.

I have never used it in competition but it hits what I point it at. However, a friend wanted some rounds to shoot in a competition and asked what I had so I gave him enough of the as cast (not sized) 31141, gas checked over IMR4227 and he won the shoot with them against "J" bullets used by all other competitors.

I like the boolit and it seems to like my gun and others!

Have fun it is a good boolit.
