Lyman 45 lubricator/sizer

My Lyman 45 lubricator seems to have a weak spring that attaches to the lower block that supports the threaded depth adjuster. I have to lift up on the handle to place the boolit in the die. Should this spring hold the handle in the full up position? If so, I could try shortening the spring, but I don't want to ruin it if this is the way it is supposed to be. I didn't contact Lyman, yet, as I always seem to get good answers to my questions here.
I did a search, but didn't find anything relating to this.

Yes, the spring should return the handle fully upright.

When I did my refurb, I replaced the spring with one that was slightly stiffer since I added a large oak handle.

Spring was found in an assortment at my local Ace Hdwe.

I have 2 of these; only one of them has a spring on it. The other works fine without a spring. If you want the handle to stay up, melt a little bullet lube on the sliding surfaces. This keeps it lubed, but also makes the sliding action just a little stiff, enough to keep the handle up.
