Harley45 - I am currently working on a write up that explains the difference. In the meantime check out this thread. It was when SwedeNelson introduced them.

I have been asked many times about the difference between a standard Night Owl Enterprises (NOE) mold and the RG molds they produce. I’ve created this write up to explain.
NOE’s standard molds come in a selection of one to five cavities. With a few rare exceptions, any of these molds can have a single cavity hollow pointed. See the following pictures as examples. Thanks to SwedeNelson for the pictures.
Standard Molds
http://castboolits.gunloads.com/picture.php?albumid=294&pictureid=2026
Standard Molds with hollow point pin and holder knob
http://castboolits.gunloads.com/picture.php?albumid=294&pictureid=2028
The RG series of molds that NOE produces have either two or four cavities. All cavities are hollow pointed. The RG molds come with a set of pins for hollow points and a set of pins for flat points. The pins are attached to the mold blocks with a system that resembles the Cramer hollow point system. However, in the RG system the pins are retained by steel slides attached to the bottom of the mold block instead of sliding pins that go through one of the mold halves. This system allows aluminum mold blocks to have multiple hollow points. The Cramer system is usually reserved for harder metal mold blocks like steel or brass. See the following pictures for examples of the RG system.

I have a Saeco Lubri-Sizer and am new to reloading. Question regarding the top punch. Should a punch design for a round nose bullet be used? If not, what top punch is recommended?
SciFiJim
03-13-2010, 07:37 PM
Jon5544 - Your mold comes with a top punch designed to fit the boolit.
jon5544
03-13-2010, 09:15 PM
The die mentioned is a Lyman, RCBS...either I need to find an adapter for the Saeco or will a Saeco style punch be provided instead of the Lyman, RCBS?
SciFiJim
03-13-2010, 10:46 PM
Jon,
I had to do a bit of googling to find out that Saeco top punches are threaded. I learned something new today.
The top punch that is provided with the mold has a straight shank designed for the Lyman/RCBS type lube sizers.
After looking at the Saeco mold charts, it looks like a close fit would be a 45424 top punch.

Jon, A bit more googling and I found that hollowpointmold.com sells an adapter.
Top punch adaptor-fits Lyman or RCBS top punches to Saeco lubri-sizer press. $20 each shipped. (http://www.hollowpointmold.com/forsale/viewimage.php?type=sale&item=100&image=100&display=+Saeco+%3A+Top+punch+adaptor-fits+Lyman+or+RCBS+top+punches+to+Saeco+lubri-sizer+press.+++%2420+each+shipped.)
That way you could have an exact fit for the top punch.

Are there different pin profile's we can get such as the hex shape?
SciFiJim

NOE only provides the standard round shape profile shown in post #1 and pins for a non hollow pointed boolit. However, you can order blank pins and create your own profiles.

What a lot of people have had success with, is to try logging in with the information that you used for the setup. Seems a lot of people get the error, but the info goes in anyway. Give it a try and see if it works.

25-Feb The 452-230grHP Group Buy will be scheduled for production once we reach 15 orders. The group buy will run until two week before production.
19-Mar That make 15 molds ordered. I need to get with SwedeNelson to get this one on the schedule. We are probably looking at September.
19-May It is currently scheduled for production in October.
10-Jun ....some time in the fall.
23-Sep The group buy is currently scheduled for January.
Wow ! , how certain is the January schedule?
SciFiJim
10-07-2010, 07:59 PM
Jon, We are at the mercy of the shop that manufactures them. The schedule was changed to three group buys a month to allow time for things that come up during the group buys that precede it (hopefully without throwing the schedule off any more).
I understand the frustration of everyone that has been waiting on these. If anyone is unwilling to wait, I will cheerfully send a refund along with an apology for not being able to get it done sooner. I think the schedule will work as configured, but I cannot give a guarantee.

It was 65º here today. Supposed to be 68º tomorrow. It's nice this time of year, but the summers can get up to 110º.

I hate you guys! My lawn is somewhere under 3 feet of frozen snow!!!!
Last time we had a winter like this, it was early JUNE before I had to mow the lawn. In fact, that year, we had snow on the roof until end of April, and snowbanks on the shady roads until the first of May.
I got the rest of them mailed today.

Yeah, but when it is nice there, it will be 100+ here. In the summer, I take a towel with me to the range and make sure to cover anything metal or it gets too hot to hold comfortably.

Thanks Jim,
Mine arrived Thursday. I really appreciate the effort you put into Honcho'ing this mold.
Best regards, Gunstocl
Well I just checked my mail and there was a package in there!
I shook it and it rattled and part's were loose in it,checked the label and it was my mold.
When I got it home and was wondering what in the world could be so loud.
When I opened it I was shocked!
The mold itself is in a little cardboard box but everything else was loose!
No packing, no bubble wrap, no newspaper nothing!
I AM NOT IMPRESSED!
For what I payed and the time i waited could he not have put it all in a small plastic bag?
He took the time to but the bottle of lube in one,and there was enough room to put all the misc part's in the same bag. If not use another bag!
Here's a pic of what I saw when I opened it.
http://i807.photobucket.com/albums/yy356/zuke_bucket/mold.jpg
If anyone what's to buy it it's up for sale.
All I ask is for what I have into it which is $120.00 and you pay shipping.
SciFiJim
02-23-2011, 05:38 PM
All of the parts were in the plastic bag when it was mailed. Three layers of packaging (a box or bag inside of a box inside of an envelope) has to this point been sufficient. Of the hundreds of molds that I have shipped to numerous countries and all over the US, there hasn't been a problem until now. I will see if I can find a solution to keep the parts in the bag.
bootsnthejeep

Mine did the same thing, but all the parts were there and it doesn't affect the mould.
I don't care. Certainly not the end of the world. :veryconfu
Think I'll keep mine.

Has anyone cast and weighed the solid flatpoints to see what they weigh?
246 with lube.

Thank you Al Nelson for solving my problem.

Thanks Scott. I did finally get some cast. Think they will work great for what I want to do with them.

If anyone what's to buy it it's up for sale.
All I ask is for what I have into it which is $120.00 and you pay shipping.
I fail to see what the problem is. Are you missing parts? Doesn't look like it. Is your allen wrench dented or dinged? Jim is an awesome honcho and has come through on NUMEROUS group buys. I would tend to believe him when he says the other items came out of the little bag with the lube. Hope you find a buyer quickly for your box of loose parts and super hot NOE mold.

Jim has shipped several moulds to me here in Canada. Zero problems or issues, and I'm in the boonies of Newfoundland, including for this particular mould. Mould halves were secured together with thick rubber band and al extra small parts arrived in a small plastic baggie.

Delivery confirmation:
Got it yesterday afternoon, went home too early to start the pot.
I started casting maybe before 8PM, end past 12 midnight but never got a handful of
quality boolits!
I've been tossing around in my bed why on earth my new mold is not casting nice 45HP bullets! So I wake up again early, maybe before 6AM today and start the pot again. As I was looking at the mold and trying to figure out what's wrong, I noticed my other molds were smoked, while this one is so shiny! So I start to smoked it right away, and when the temps looks okay, fill it with lead. My goodness, the result was beautiful looking 45 hollow points boolits!
I hate to smoke it because I really like the way it looks, its so shiny! The craftmanship is so beautiful, the fittings are so nice and its really nice to hold!
Wow, I was really in awe everytime I looked at those hollow points!
Thanks a lot and am so grateful for all the people who make this thing happen!

Taminsong,
That sure is purty. What did you coat it with?

I am also curious on how you lubed the boolit without scraping off the coating in the sizing die.

Hehehehehe, I know this will create curiosity!
Actually the technology to coat that bullet is already there in your backyard! It is called "Powder Coating" and if you research it, you can for sure find a lot of info.
I just paint it, then bake it in the toaster oven and when its cool, resized it in my Lyman 4500!
I'm just curious, will you pay 0.50 cents for that bullet?
My friends are really interested and we test some rounds this morning, and my, the bullet mushroom well!

If there's an extra mold in the order or someone decides they don't want to keep theirs, I'd really like to have one of these in an RG-4.

if you powder coat it I thought that took the place of lubing?
so why lube too?

Looking for some help with casting hollow points. This is my first attempt at casting any HP bullet, and I'm having a heck of a time. I've tried on three separate occasions to get this mold to throw at least one good bullet - with no success.
I did follow the directions included with the mold - to heat up and cool down, degrease, etc...
I have a PID controller for my pot, so I am positive my temp is accurate (I calibrate gages and transmitters at work for a living) and consistent. I've tried casting all the way up to 780F and they still come out wrinkled and shiny. I've preheated the mold with a hot plate, edge of pot and immersion in the melt for up to a minute, all with no success. I cast as fast as humanly possible, no success. I am all ears for any tips or pointers.
The only thing I haven't tried is a ladle poor. I have tried with my bottom pour to vary the distance and speed of flow into the mold, up to touching the spout to the sprue plate and wide open valve...
This same melt (92/6/2 from Rotometals) casts perfect 452-255-FN from my Lee mold.
Thanks

Russ68 I try to keep my pot at 700-750 degrees and once the mold is heated to approx. 500+degrees, I'm good to go.

Blammer,
Sorry for late reply, I got sick for a week.
I resized the boolit to be sure its round and I don't mind the wax. Yeah, shooters here in my place use boolits like that without wax. But I think wax will help a bit, I'm not really sure.
One thing that I found out, when I resize it in the star, powder coated ones just glide thru, you don't need a lot of effort to push the star handle compared to sizing just plain lead. Maybe this is what also happens when you shoot it.

I'd be interested to see if a powder coated boolit limits the expansion of these HPs. Powder coat is a pretty tuff shell, I was thinking it might resist expansion. Just a thought.
