green sand ingots?

I have used "green sand" to make ingots for years. Also have used it to make decoy anchors etc... Anyone else using "green sand"?

Its moulding sand. Silcone based iirc. Very high temps. 10ga why don't you make a photo demonstration for us newbies.

I believe it is sand that occurs naturally It is green due to microscopic plant remains.Good for garden mix. I may be wrong ...

Did a quick Google. Apparently the "green sand" used in gardening as a source of potassium is not the same thing as the "green sand" used in foundry mold casting. They are not interchangeable.

I've used it for casting aluminum parts and a little brass I was toying with but never for making ingots.

Green sand, is a mixture of fine sand, and clay, with just enough water to make it stick together.

green sand is called that because its not a baked mould or a dried mould ect.....

just plain old wet sand and a little clay with maybe an additive or 2

green sand comes in all colours

I havent tried it for ingots, but i would be kinda suspicious of sand getting into your ingot, and getting into your bullet, and rubbing against your barrel.

The lead would sink, and particulates would be able to be skimmed off.
Nothing would hit the barrel that was unintended.

i suppose i should correct myself here, green sand doesnt come in ALL colours (purple, chartreuse,) but there are different colours.

They had this wierd formaldehyde sand stuff that was yellow, looked like some mean stuff to be around, and there is a sand that looks for all the world like ground up oreos !!! black and white.

And you make good sense, the sand WOULD float to the top like any impurity...........hmmm cannon balls

You can carve your custom size moulds from wood to make the form. I like the 5lb size ingots that Roto Metal's sell. You can also make a custom aluminum ingot mould using green sand, but much more work. Here is short video...search for materials needed.

Green sand molds can only be used once. Why not make an ingot mold from fired pottery clay? A terra-cotta ingot mold should work very well.

It is really hard to beat welded angle iron with custom orange mold release! :)

I used to work in various Ford foundries, and visited others run by GM. The sand, clay & a little water mix was referred to as 'green sand' because of the water. The sand was always actually black after a little use.
