View Full Version : Lyman 358156 in a 357 Rifle?

I'm playing with a new Rossi 357 Lever gun and been shooting some Lyman 358156 bullets. They are plenty accurate but are leaving light streaks of lead near the muzzle. There is no leading at the breech end, and I have slugged the bore and matched my bullets to the proper size. I have also lapped the bore to a mirror finish. So at this point I am assuming that the lube is inadequate. I am using Rooster Red on these and also use it with other rifle bullets that I shoot at similar velocities with zero leading in those other barrels. I am to the point that I think the single narrow lube groove in that particular design just don't hold enough lube for a 20" ride. I shoot these same loads in two revolvers with zero leading also. Any suggestions?

Skeeter Skelton had no problems with that boolit in some M-92 Winnies he had rechambered to .357....

FWIW,

Dennis

Try some of Lars Carnuba Red. Bet that'll work!

I have long used that bullet in .357 Rifles with none of your problems. I fill all grooves (including the crimp grooves) with lube and wipe off any excess after the bullets are seated and crimped.

I don't know squat about your lube, but beeswax cut with Vaseline does it for me.

Obviously you're running out of lube. Give 'em a light coat of LLA on top of the other lube and try again.

Ive also just started shooting a rossi .357, and the only bullet ive shot so far is the 358156, sized .358, and a hot load of #9 powder. I dont have any leading problems, but relize your concerns about not much lube on this bullet! I use felix lube and havnt seen any leading yet(about 240 shots). This thing shoots clay birds at 50-60 yards off-hand very easily, so i aint intrested in working up a load for it,yet.

Sounds like you all have confirmed my thinking. I have a couple other lubes that are soft lubes, I'll give one of them a try. It's just such a pain to switch lubes in the lubrisizer.

.................You can try a different lube but it all boils down to "What is happening to your accuracy"? Anything? A bit of gray wash isn't a real bad thing so long as your accuracy remains. If it remains steady and doesn't build it shouldn't be a problem.

I have several rifles which will show a gray streak in the groove, but it never gets any worse and it just keeps on shooting. I thing each slugs just picks it up and lays a new streak each time.

Ted, I didn't suggest that you switch lube. I suggested that you add LLA to your already lubed bullets.

Junior is giving the same advice I would give. Give them a coating of Lee Loquod Alox over the lube you are using and your leading problem will go away.

I'd put lube in the first crimp groove also. You might try that before switching lubes or using the LLA. The extra lube in the crimp groove should give you enough lube for use in rifles. It works for me with Javelina on the 358156 in rifles. I currently use that bullet in a 26" barreled .35 Remington at 2044 fps with no leading. Thumps the hell out of little critters, probably would on big critters too!

That boolit is accurate at 2400 guesstimation with the 35 remington. 40 grains H335/WC844 or equivalent. Fully lubed, sticking into the throat. ... felix

I gave 20 of them a light coat of LLA last night. Will load them and see how they do this weekend. I'm just not a big fan of the LLA. It works fine, I just don't care for the mess and lube on the parts of the bullets that aint in the case.

Mine has a 1-14" twist so it hits 140,400 RPM at 2000 fps. The load I mentioned maintains 2-3 MOA at 100 yards (with iron sights). I have cast them harder and managed reasonable accuracy accuracy at 2320 fps with 39 gr of 4895. However the extra fps for 36% more powder doesn't seem worth it for what I shoot with that bullet. I've been looking for a RCBS 200 gr FN mould for it, that would be another story.
