boolit standards

I've been wondering how y'all sort your boolits after casting.for revolver I sort +\- 1grn clean lines no wrinkles and for rifle +\- .5 grn clean lines no wrinkles am I too picky or not enough I do get good accy and remelt about 15 per 100.Just thought I'd ask. my compliments on a great forum

For the most part, no base defects, good fill out, and no visible voids.

voids in base, square driving bands, too shiney,and anything that looks like an inclusion goes back.
this usually weight sorts them close enough.
if i am going for extreme accuracy at 100 yds or more, then weight sorting into batches comes into play.

For pistol, good base, decent fill out, its going to get shot. The real good ones I load up for hunting rounds.
For rifle (M1 Garand) I am a little more picky. But I dont cast for it that often, cause I dont shot it that much.

It doesn't matter in pistol as much as rifle because of shooting distance. If it looks good shoot it or just for fun load up a few that don't quite look good enough and compair to your normal shots and see.

just thinking about my standards if they were outrageous or realistic I'm more into accuracy than quantity. my best group w/my 44 is 1.3 @ 32yds 30-30 311041 @ 100yds 1.15 these are 5 shot groups and I use sandbags loads r not max.I've not been serious about casting for long but have done it for several yrs usualy groups run a little bigger but these r my best so far

I never weigh revolver boolits, I just look at them.
I went out of my way several times and weighed a batch for accuracy grouping. Waste of time. I always had worse groups for some reason.

I never weigh revolver boolits to look for the occassional light one with internal voids, etc. I do look for obvious defects when I pick one up to load, but other than that, I've found it not worth my time. I should add that all my revolver shooting is in .44 caliber. When I load for 25 to 35 cal rifle match shooting I do sort my boolits by weight.

Agree with Shuz on handgun blts. On rifle blts however it is a different world particularly in the cals smaller than 30, and in the liteweights in 30. On 375's and above plain bases visual is adequate to suit me.

+1 on not weighing for handgun loads but rifle boolits are a different ball of wax. 100% visual inspection for all calibers followed by random sampling (usually 5%) weighed. If I find consistent variance in excess of +/- 1/2 grain, I'll either weigh 100% or (more likely) toss the whole lot back into the pot, clean/resmoke the mould, and start over.

I just do a visule insection. But I do not shoot compition W/ cast. If i did I would probibly wiegh.

As said by others, I dont weigh pistol rounds. If they look good and fill out good when sized they are good to go for me.

I just started getting serious with cast rifle and after reading some of you guys talking about + or - 1/2 grain, I might be getting a little carried away with my sorting. WOW. I have less than 1 grain of difference from lightest to heaviest. I've been sorting into 2 boxes of + or - .1grain for 257 rbts accuracy loads. The heavies or lights get remelted or used for foulers.

Am I just wasting my time?

For .30 rifle, I usually keep +/- 0.2gr, and wonder if that's good enough. My heavy 30 - 30 isn't winning much, but in good conditions gets 4 group averages( 5 shots @ 100yd ) around 0.65" to 0.75". With a careful job of casting, I get very few bullets .5gr off the average.
