I just want to say that I am happy as a clam now that I've finally fixed my misfire problem on my .30-30 Marlin.

After trying a No-go gauge and it not fitting I was about to call it quits but instead got out my other 336 in .35 Remington. I noticed that the rear firing pin stuck out alot further than the one on the .30-30.

In short, I made up a duplicate out of a stainless 1/4" bolt by filing away the slots and turning a small radius on the front on the drill press with a file. I had a box of 50 311440 loads with 17.5 grains of SR4759 and it fired every single one. They were sized to .310" and the micro-groove liked them very much.

So, after much ado, I finally have a .30-30 with a scope again.

I just picked up a 336T 30-30, and I'm having trouble with misfires too. So far I've taken out the firing pin, cleaned everything up in there, and deburred here, and there. Still had misfires but the firing pin protrusion looked OK. I checked the hammer spring, and it seemed just a bit shorter than a new one, so I stuck a new one in, and now have to take it to the range, and see if that fixed it. If it didn't, I'll have to see what firing pin protrusion should be, and maybe go the route you did.

I would caution you to check the headspace too. You are welcome to the loan of my .30-30 No-Go gauge. It didn't fit on mine so I assume that the headspace is fine. Funny, I have 2-other 336 types and a 93 and none of them have this problem. Let me know your addy and I'll put the gauge in the mail for you to try.
