I found this rack in 1998 during a pheasant hunt. Got a salvage tag and it has been taking up space in the garage since then. Finally got around to mounting it using Carpetman's suggestion. The board is red cedar that came from my dad's farm. I scalloped the edges with a dremel and then used red mohogany stain to fill them in. The rest was coated with clear poly urathene.

Mark,

The mount is very nice, but the two kids are just sweet.. You're lucky.

Nice Rack. Don't see em like that around here. What did you use in the center to cover the skull piece?

Looks good I like the wood, Im going to have to use that on one of my next ones. Not to steal your thunder but here are a few I have done for my Uncle...The woods is teak scrap that he had from putting the floor in his kitchen.

He shot the Elk and the Caribou, but the Whitetail was from 1948 I think, his grandfather shot it.

This one here was the first buck I ever killed. I figured I would make the mount a little different from the normal leather and oak.

I actually make good money doing mounts around deer season. 20-25 bucks a piece which is almost all profit because the wood is scrap. I ussally get 10-20 mounts a year from my uncles and people my mom works with as well as my friends, brother, my dads, and mine.

I used leather that is basically the same stuff you would find in the interior of a car. It was sold as surplus from a biz jet manufacturer. I wrapped the skull in strips of cloth cut from a t-shirt. Leather is held in place with hot glue.

No worries about stealing my thunder, I stole the idea from a guy at work.

Boy those rack mounts are much easier than a European skull mount! After getting advice on numerous forums (what would we do without the Internet?) I set out to mount the two bucks my daughter and I killed last October.

Talk about work! I thought I would NEVER get all the flecks of meat and tissue off the first head. Then, after boiling it numerous times, I finally got the brain tissue out. I ended up bleaching them with cheapy hair bleach kits from Wally World (where else?). I mounted them with 3 inch deck screws through the skull and upper jaw. I purchased a Caping Knife after the fact, of course!

They turned out pretty well. I'll have to get the pics posted.
