Hi all,
I was thinking that we could try to make a fairly comprehensive list of suppliers and the powders they carry. I'll start out with 3 of them. If you know of other places to get it, send me a link and I'll add it to the list. Maybe we could get it to be a sticky so we could all use it as a source of information.
Thoughts?
I don't know how all the tabs and format will carry over here, but here goes.

Lar45, you mentioned 844 earlier. You may already know, but I'll mention it anyway, because I've played around with this powder in particular. It likes to be pressured up to work best.

In case some of the newcomers on the board don't know, there are quite a few surp powders data on castpics. All of those loads were developed and test by members here or at the old shooters board.
http://www.castpics.net/RandD/load_data/load_data.htm

I'll also offer up this warning again. Lot numbers are EVERYTHING with the surp powders. Pay attention to ALL of the WARNINGS offered by anyone who has been using them.

From time to time Powder Valley will have one or more surplus powders available. You need to watch their web site. When they have one I want, and I've picked up several, I have them bring it to the big Tulsa Gun Show to save hazmat and shipping. They are good folks, and their specials are usually worth investing in. I've gotten H108, AA2230C, Data 73, Data 86, and several others all in the 50 to 65 dolla range. sundog

Yes that is a very good link to have in there.
I looked at powder valley, but they didn't have anything listed right now. We should put a link to them in there though.

It wouldn't hurt to post shipping, handling, and "hazmat" charges for the suppliers. I've found some variation on hazmat charges from various sources.
You might mention Midway. Not surplus, but just started supplying powders and primers........................Lee:)

I've dealt with Wideners, Pat's, and Hi-tech over the years and all were easy to deal with and helpful - Wideners is local so you'd think I'd be there lots, but their hours are so bad its easier to shop online. I work about an hour from them and they are only open weekdays and only during work hours so I never make it.

Pat's takes orders week nights which is nice - til 10pm eastern.

Hi-tech I know will take orders on Saturdays which is nice as time through the week is sometimes a scarce commodity.

All in all - just depends on who has what when and when I can get an order in.

The Scott-453 you mention, I pickup a pound of that the other day, I thought that I had done a lot of research with no luck on finding loading data! What is it close to, I only load pistol (mainly) and use everything Unique, red Dot, blue dot, 700x,800x, and others.
Could you help me! I shoot all light loads, so if I could get close, isn't it close to Win231?
I appreciate any help!

Scot powders were one-offs of existing powders from other companies in their numbering system. That powder was a very close relative of Winchester 452. You might find some data for 452. As Felix said, it is a fast powder, close to WW 231 in burning speed.

Scott 453 shot shell and handgun loading data were emailed to me after I called Accurate Arms. It is very close to W231 and HP 38 and about the same as Trap 100 and W452. Is there a particular cartridge and bullet weight you need data for Greg?

Greg, I also have data from Accurate as well. It may be the same data oso has. Data is for .38 Special, .38 Spl.+P, 9MM, .357 mag.,.45 ACP, .40 S&W, .38 Super, .380 ACP, .44 Mag. If this covers what you need send me a PM with your address and I'll photocopy the data and mail to you...Ray

If you like Red Dot, check out Alliant "Promo". It's slightly less bulky than Red Dot, but other than that it's interchangeable and it's really cheap. Not a lot of people know about it, so it doesn't sell out as fast. (also Green Dot is a good pistol powder that's not very popular)

I just bought 8lbs of WC844 from Pat's Reloading for $85. Even with the $25 for Hazmat (total $110) it still is better per pound than buying H335 from my local gunsmith who marks everything up through the roof.

I also bought 500 M2 150gr FMJs for my M1 Garand shooting (highpower matches) as well.

They were very helpful and I'm looking forward to having a good stock of powder for my ARs as well.

GIBrass is still relatively cheap.

WC820 Brand new, virgin powder. Orignal application is for the U.S. Cal. .30 Carbine
new Ball M1 round. This lot loads at 14gr with 110gr FMJ projectile. A ball powder which
can be loaded using Hodgdon H110 data. Ideal for .410 shotgun and the
.357 & .44 Magnums. Limited quantity.
This is new ball powder.
$140/8# jug.

IMR7383 This is a slow burning stick powder originally used for the Cal. .50
M48A2 Spotter/Tracer round. This is not the same case as that known as
the .50 Browning Machine Gun cartridge. This powder is NOT recommended
for the .50 BMG round. It is a very bulky, single-based powder, composed
of 85% nitrocellulose and 15% stabilizers, flash inhibitors and graphite;
that was developed to replace the IMR4831 powder that was being used.
It has about the same propellant energy as IMR4831 when compared in equal
volume. IMR4831 data can be used. Begin with starting loads, reduced 15%
by weight.
This is new powder, not pulldown.
$56/7# jug.

WC857 New item. A slow burning ball type powder developed for the .50BMG tracer
ammo. This powder burns faster than the typical WC860 thru WC872 series of
powders. This powder has not been released as a canister powder. Loads can
be worked up using H-870 or AA-8700 data, less 10%. Burning rate seems to be
similar to Hodgdon H1000 or Reloder 25. An excellent choice for the .300 Win Mag,
7mm Mag, and other magnum type calibers. Good results in .25-06 with heavy bullets.
This is pulldown ball powder from Lake City.
$72/8# jug

IMR5010 Original application is .50 Cal. BMG ammo. Same powder as originally sold
by Hodgdon as H5010, and similar to their current 50BMG. Very slow burning
that can be used in most of the bigger magnum calibers.
This is pulldown extruded powder from Lake City.
$64/8# jug.

WC860 Original application is U.S. .50 Cal. BMG ammo, used for the Ball
M33 and API M8 projectile. A ball powder which can be loaded using
Hodgdon H870 or AA8700 data. Just received a limited supply.
This is pulldown ball powder from Lake City.
$56/8# jug; $216/4-8# jugs ($54/jug); $300/6-8# jugs ($50/jug)

WC870 Here is some of the exact original type powder as was sold by Hodgdon, called
H870, until discontinued. A ball powder originally used in the 20mm Vulcan
round, until replaced by WC872. This powder is also very similar to Accurate
Arms AA8700. Because of the lot to lot variations in burn rate, be sure to
begin with listed starting load data. Works great in the .50BMG and other
large capacity magnums.
This is pulldown ball powder.
$48/8# jug; $176/4-8# jugs ($44/jug); $240/6-8# jugs ($40/jug)

WC872 Original application is U.S. 20mm Vulcan ammo. A ball powder which
can be loaded using Hodgdon H870 or AA8700 data. Very limited supply.
Ideal for .50 BMG and other large capacity magnums.
This is pulldown ball powder.
$48/8# jug; $176/4-8# jugs ($44/jug); $240/6-8# jugs ($40/jug)

Anybody have info on the company, what these powders might be and what they might be used for?
Any info would be of great help.
Thanks,

A friend of mine has some 20 lb kegs of IMR4895 he bought in the '70s. The kegs are from WW2 and are tar paper sealed. He is offering the powder to me for $15 a lb. Of coarse this is all dependent on opening a keg and inspecting the contents.

Does this sound like a good deal?

IMO, $15 a pound is a terrible deal. Now where does that friend of yours live.

Likewise. With an order of two 8 lb jugs (one H110, one TiteGroup) the H110 $18.50 / lb base price goes up to $21.73.

The final rate below of $15.56 / lb sounds great. The 32# Lot sizes however are probably just too big for 99.9% of end users.

Namenska? I'd take a chance on that but it's recomendation for only 25acp and 9mm makes me think it is uber fast stuff.

Well, whatever you may have wanted at american reloading is pretty much gone now. I didn't see any of that powder

Ordered 8 lb of MP501 to experiment with. Near as i can figure is this may be somewhat close to power pro 2000 or power pro 3000 or SHP 763. Wishing to give this a try in a bolt action 6mm ARC. Load data is supposed to be similar to SHP 761 which seems to have no Data to be found, thus far. guessing this is between Reloader 15.5 & Reloader 16

Was actually similar to a never marketed power pro 3000 on the Ballistic assistant burn rate chart, a stick powder that is fairly bulky. 27 grains will fit in the 6mm arc & will yield just over 2500 from my 22" Pacnor barrel w MOA accuracy at 100 yards. 26.5 grains of this MP501 is yielding just under 2500 FPS with sub MOA accuracy with initial work up.

Using PP 2000 / PP 3000 as a burn rate reference seems right according to the info I have. SW Long Rifle also seems pretty close. Using data for slightly faster powders for comparison is generally accepted alternate option. This would be stuff like Ramshot Big Game, Alliant 15 or Accurate 2520. Is this ball or stick?

The thread started years ago, but look at the title. Milsurp availability is poor at the moment, but folks are finding and trying stuff. The topic remains relevant as new Milsurp purchases are made. Getting reports back on use of odd-ball stuff can also be very helpful.

MP501 turned out to be a stick powder Perhaps close or similar to reloader 15.5 / N540. This is per a visual that Johnny's reloader bench offered working up Reloader 15.5 in the 308 / 6mm ARC on youtube where Reloader 15, 15.5 AR comp, Varget, N540 & Reloader 16 are visually compared.

Visualy this appears similar to the N540 / Reloader 15. & on the Ballistic assistant burn rate chart seems to be closest to Reloader 15.5, a bit slower than the R 15.5 & perhaps less dense.
