Hello,
I'm new in casting boolits.Looking for a heavy cast for my rifle 7.62X39 Russian I find a Lee mold C312-185-1R . I like the design, but when I saw the dimension of the boolit - the nose dia. - 0.303 - I realize that I'm not ready with the knowledge.
I already use a jacketed Sierra 2310 SPT .311 180 gr., but better is to ask (even a stupid question)and to learn more. Did somebody try this heavy cast for this caliber?

Welcome to the best cast boolit site in the universe.

I am not familiar with that caliber so will leave the answer to those with the info. Most of them will be here a little later.

We all started out with 0 experience. Now MANY years later The Cast Boolit University has been opened here.

Again welcome

ou need to slug the bore on your rifle and measure the land to land dimention and the groove dimension (bore diameter and groove diameter). Then you will know if the nose will fit into the rifling. That Bullet which I use in my 7.62 X54 has a bore ridding nose that is supposed to be a slip fit into the bore and ride atop the lands. So it depends on the as cast dimension of your bullet and the measurement of the bore of your rifle.

Hi there, 311-200.

Welcome to an amazing Forum. :drinks:

The collective knowledge and wisdom here is amazing! (So is the wit. ) This is the most civil and respectful sight I know of. (If you use bad language, it gets automatically censored. Cool!)

Right, I can't answer your question but ..... maybe I can help in some small way.

Might I ask what rifle you have and do you know the rifling twist? Bore size seems to be a mystery - it is to me anyway! Groove diameter is supposed to be .311 and bore diameter can be between .30 and .303. Or so I read. I am a Lee Enfield fan which has also got a bit of a chamber dimension and bore/groove diameter variation. For example, my good bore 303 Brit has a bore of .304 and groove of .312 (well within spec) I can load a boolit of .316 into the throat. That's good because it means I don't have to resize the case necks (unless I want to magazine feed).

Then, if I may just sow the seed, [smilie=1: we have paper patching. Not a bad place to start out, mind you, but it does open up the options and can quite easily complicate matters somewhat. But it's all fun!

By the way, I am interested in seeing how a heavy boolit will perform in 7.62 Soviet.

Thank you for your answers !
The barrel twist is 1:9.45 The land to land .300 -7.62mm and the groove .311-7.92mm .This is AK 47 7.62X39 barrel.I thing that the 7.62X54r has the same dimensions.

Howdy and welcome.

I cast the Lee 155gr boolit, and that's about as large--physical size--as I want to stuff in that short 7.62x39 case. I believe there have been a few people here who have played around with that Lee 185gr boolit in loads for the AKs and SKSs.

That Lee 185gr boolit is excellent and VERY versatile. I use it in my 30-06, 30-30 and .303--all with exceptional results.

You can size that boolit (the 185 gr) down in diameter to fit your bore and still have plenty of groove depth left for lube.

Welcome to the site.

Find someone with a lot of back issues of the Fouling Shot which is the newsletter of the Cast Bullet Association.

Maybe 5 years ago there was an artcle in there that was well done on shooting heavy bullets in the SKS. As well as I recall, it was possible to shoot 200 grain cast in it. Maybe not as a repeater but he did a real fine job on that subject./beagle

.............This is the Lyman 311284 in the 30 Rooski Shortski. The pliers holding the slug to the left is simply to show about where the slug sits in the case. It engraves well. No? 8-) I have a small ring (M1894 Brazilian action) barreled .300" x .308" and chambered 7.62x39 so 30 cal moulds are abundant. With your groove, the only commonly available mould would be the Lyman 314299.

That heavy slug is superbly accurate (rifle has a 10" twist) but as you would suspect, the velocity suffers. The Lee C312-155-2R on the right has no problems at 1975 fps.

Welcome to the board!
