I'm looking for others who missed out on this mould the first time around.
We need 5 confirmed orders to make this a Small Group Buy.
As part time mould makers the boys at Night Owl are booked up thru June, so depending on when the order went in this mould would come out around July.
Anyone interested?

Question, has any one RD about this, he did a lot of R&D for these bullets, he should get some credit for his work.

Jerry, it says in the first post these are being run with Michael's consent. Michael (Ranch Dog) did a masterful job designing these fabulous boolits and Al's NOE executes Michael's designs far better than Lee ever did. Anyone who has never seen a Ranch Dog boolit meet deer hide is missing an experience. Thanks for bringing this up. Michael Reamy is only started to be recognized as a great bullet designer

Duckhunter, you're in.
Now we watch this thread and wait.
The last I read this mould is scheduled to be cut in June with delivery in July. Sometime in May (?) this buy will close and SwedeNelson will post details on sending payment to Night Owl Enterprises to confirm your order. That way NOE isn't stuck will a bunch of custom moulds that someone wanted in January but couldn't find the funds for in June. A pretty good deal when you compare it to some of the Lee special group buys that were a year or more between writing a check and casting a bullet. And the quality of these NOE moulds are second to none.

Probably a dumb question but would this work in a 94 marlin 357 ?
You are on you own for a suitable powder charge but the overall length of the cartridge (using 38 Special cases) would be the same as a regular 357 cartridge. It should feed through the rifle action. My old Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook has loading data for both 357 Magnum and 38 Special with bullets up to 195 grain weight. I am sure the newer books will have loading data for heavy bullets also. I think it would be best to use the data from the 38 Special loads for starting loads. Be very careful if you work up from there. It would be an interesting project. Trim all cases to the same length (1.149 or 1.150 inches) to ensure good crimps and a not to long overall length. 357 cases are too long to use with this bullet. Good luck and post the results if you try it.
With that said, this heavy bullet may restrict the velocity you can get out of the 38 Special case. The .359-190 RF would probably be best used in the 35 Remington or larger case. For the 357 Magnum there are several tried and true bullets you can use. A few would be 358429 (170 gr.), 358156 (155 gr.), 358665 (158 gr.). Any one of these three will serve you well.
Beerd
03-17-2010, 02:16 PM
smithgar3840,
The consensus is that when loaded in a 357 case this bullet is too long to function in the Marlin 1894.
I wouldn't be surprised if you loaded some in 38 Spl brass to +P+ pressure, the longer carbine barrel would get them going as fast as a 357 revolver.

Post what type of mould you want, # cavities, hollow point, plain base or gas checked or combination. Look back at post 1 to see your options. I am trying to keep the buyer list current so Swede Nelson has some kind of idea of the size of the production run.

My Herrett barrels are .30's so I can't say for sure, but this bullet has earned a good reputation in the .357 Maximum so I don't see why it wouldn't be just as effective in the .357 Herrett.

I found the answer.
As designed by Ranch Dog for use in Marlin lever actions, the front crimp groove is for loading in the 35 Rem and the lower groove is for the 356 Win.
..
Thanks for looking into that. I've been skeptical of multi-lube groove molds thus far however Ranch Dog molds do seem to benefit from quite a reputation. In the 35 Rem would one fill the lower crimp groove with lube?
I'm not against having to get a mold for each gun if it means performance is improved. Sure you can remove any size nut with a single Crescent wrench... in theory. :)
Beerd

You wouldn't have to but that is always an option. Kind of depends on which way you think shoots best in your rifle.

you have been added to the list of interested buyers
cost for NOE moulds is in the original post
the last info we have is that production is scheduled for July with delivery in August
Swede Nelson will call for payment sometime before that
I don't know about loading these in a 357 mag. Like you, I am going to have to wait until I get my mould and see.

Thanks Beerd.
Hmm… If Swede Nelson can find a way to put the crimp groove close enough to the nose so that it will fit in a 357 case without having to trim it short I am definitely in on this buy.

2ndAmendmentNut,
We can get this bullet set up for a gas check or a plain base.
We can get it hollow pointed or not.
We can get any combination of the above, HP GC, FP PB, etc.
However the basic design can't be changed. The number of grease grooves is fixed, the two crimp grooves have to stay where they are, the meplat is set at .256".
What firearm are you loading the .357 for?

I guess I misunderstood. You stated that you were going to have to “wait and see” in answer to my question about trimming 357 brass. Which lead me to believe the mould was still being designed. I see I was wrong now (new to the group buy's). I intend to use these or at least try to use them in a Ruger GP100, and a Marlin 94. Ideally I will not have to trim the brass short like what I have to do with 358429s.

Breed, am learning more about this cast boolit thing and I would like to change my order. I originally ordered "18. Duckhunter ........ RG2 GC"; I would like to change this to a 4 cavity mold with 2 plain base boolits and 2 gas checked boolits.
I traded for a few boolits from the original mold and I don't see the need for a hollow point boolit any longer.

Beerd
05-15-2010, 04:32 PM
Whelen B,
First, Welcome to the Board!
RG stands for Rube Goldberg
They are 2 cavity and 4 cavity hollow point moulds with a pretty clever pin setup.
Take a look at post #50 on Page 3 here to learn all about it

Thanks for the reply. Thinking about getting in on this. It would be my first NOE.
They are quite good. There is no real prep involved like there is with a Lee mold. The directions say to bring them up to temp three or four times, each time letting them cool between. I have done that, (and cleaned the mold in a boiling bath of dishwasher detergent) and they have all thrown great boolits! It is not an aluminum thing, it is a Lee thing.

is this a good feeder in a 1894c 357 marlin?
Hurricane
10-21-2010, 08:11 AM
Hollow-point,
The nose profile looks like it should be a good feeder, it works good in 35 Remington. You should be able to load this boolit in 38 special cases and use the crimp groove on the boolit. If you use 357 Mag cases you will need to crimp on the ogive in order to have a cartridge short enough to work through the action. The Ranch Dog Molds site has a discussion on this bullet titled "The 100 Year Hunter" that includes his testing of this bullet in the Marlin 1894 357 rifle as well as the Marlin 336. He cautions that you need to keep the OAL to 1.59 inches for it to work through the 357 action. He will put more data on the site as it becomes available. Whether or not this heavy a bullet is a good idea for the 357 Mag or the 38 special is another question. Tested loading data will be hard to find.
