I know this is like asking how many guns you own, but I was curious what the majority here owns in mold numbers.

Your poll is way too limiting! :)

My money is on 45 2.1. I don't think anybody is as sick as he is. I only have 75 or 80, he's got more than that in Lee six hole group buy moulds, I'm sure.

Well I've owned quite a few, but I guess I don't have as much $$$ as some as I always end up trading/selling before finding a new mold. With that I have 7 molds currently, waiting on one, but have had 30 or so different molds throughout my time casting.

Some things one doesn't need to know!

For example a quick 'head' count here in my bed room netted me 15 molds!

None of them 6 bangers!

I will now fight the urge to go count everything up for the rest of the evening.

You are right, my poll was too limiting. I only meant bullet molds; each one counted separately. I started this poll b/c my fiancee was getting a little upset that I have 29 molds. I said so let us see what everybody else does. I think I have some catching up to do. The only issue is that I don't know what else I need at this point.

SciFiJim

The only issue is that I don't know what else I need at this point.

Look for molds for guns that you want to get. Once you have the mold, you have more incentive to get the gun.

HeavyMetal
01-26-2010, 10:02 PM
Why would the fiancee be concerned about the number of molds you have?

MT Gianni
01-26-2010, 10:05 PM
You need double cavity's of your sc molds and 4 cav of your dc molds. You need a second one of hard to find obsolete ones that shoot so well in your guns you couldn't stand it if something happened to it. You need one with a different profile same weight to group just a little better.
Last count was over 15 35 cal molds and no duplicates, with a couple on the want list.

You need at least one for each bore diameter, more if handgun, muzzle loader and/or rifle share a bore diameter.

If you had asked me at the range, I'd have guessed 25-30. I just counted them here in the shop: 48 :holysheep. And I'm sure I "need" quite a few more. They range from .22 to .45 and include most common diameters. Some for handgun, some for rifle, some for ML. Some are multi-purpose.

I wish Hornady would grind up a new set of dies and produce some of the gas check diameters they've dropped over the last several years. I'd like to grab another 2-3K of the ones I'm short on --- I stopped writing mid-sentence and checked their web site -- Surprise! They're making most everything again! .22, .243, .25, 6.5, .270. 7mm/.284, .30, 8mm/.32, .338, .348, .35, .375, .416, .44, .45, .475 and .50! That covers all my needs and is a welcome sight. I guess the problem is that I tried to determine availability by checking Midway and Midsouth web sites. Neither carries all the available diameters. I guess I'll have to order directly (Ouch! $$).

I lost track many months ago. I know I have at least 8 Lee 6 bangers. I just got a MIHEC .44 6 banger that is a jewel of a mold. I bought 3 molds for my 50-90. I have two for my .223, three for my 6.5 x 55 Sweede, two for my 327 Federal Magnum, two for my .30 Carbine Ruger BH, 4 for my 9 MM's, one for my .380, a dozen or more in .38/357 and about 6 or so for my .45 acp and a handful for my 45 Colt. Then I have a few for my '29 Winch 94 in 30-30 and some more for my M-1 Garand and a Lee GB in .323. About 60 molds at last count.

It is a disease.

DragoonDrake
01-29-2010, 12:22 AM
So I have noticed a certain trend. Once you get about 20 or so molds everything goes nuts and all of a sudden there are 50. So I have realized that I do 'need' a few more. A collar button 458, a stackable 44, and round ball mold for each one of my calibers. God this is an addiction.

Actually , I have tried to clean things up around here and some of the molds went at giveaway prices and some I have just given away . I have been working with one particular style recently , I have four molds from three different makers and they may get sold too . Maybe it's best to just say , I don't have a clue how many I have .

I would like to point out that bullet molds are a little like shoes , you don't wear workboots with a tux and oxfords don't go well in the duckblind but....... they both cover your feet . Some of us may be lucky enough to have and another may be like Emelda Marcos . Conservative ? liberal ? I'm clueless there too but I do know which end of the tube the round comes out [smilie=p:

Heres a question I've often wondered about. do you store your molds with the handles on or off? I've got 11 molds so far to date and all have handles attached to them, This takes up a lot of room in storage but never liked removing them. Plus the cost factor involved in buying handles for each mold.

Rockchucker, I have around 50 Non-Lee 2 cavitys and only around 12 handles. They get swapped as needed.

This poll is not fair. It forces us to admit a sickness without the means to confront it.

Sort of like going to an AA meeting where they have to admit the sickness and then offer support to get better.

Here, we have to admit our sickness and encourage each other to not only stay sick, but get even sicker.

Dromia,
Watch out on the retirement thingy.
After many years of retirement I have found out it isn't what it was cut out to be.
After a couple of years it gets quite boring as you have done all the things you have wanted to do except shoot , so what do you do with the rest of your time.
All of a sudden you are too old and too far behind the times to get hired , (no matter what the rules, they descriminate)
Now all of a sudden retirement is very boring , Just ask me I know.

I tried to post a pic here of my bullet board but don't think I did. I did get one on the album place. When i got so many that i couldn't keep up with them I got some cork board and a frame just like Hornady, Speer, etc. display their bullets and glued one of each mold onto the cork, starting with .22 and going up to .735.
Scratched the # of cavities on each bullet then later colored coded them to indicate # of cavities. Sure helped me keep track.

I probably have 30, but half of those are a very decent selection of large-bore revolver boolits, most of the molds made by Dan at Moutain Molds.

I have been casting big bullets so long, when I tried to cast some 358/200 WFNGC's the other day, I looked like a beginner. There's definately a difference, not in procedure, but in timing and flow adjustments.

This forum has got me wanting to branch off into aquiring smaller caliber molds, and 6 and more cavity molds, and old classic molds, etc., etc., etc.[smilie=6:

Only 6 molds - all for 9mm. I have three Lee six-bangers, and 3 magma 2-cavs for my Master Caster. Mostly I only use the Master Caster, and crank them out by the thousands. I like to keep it simple, although sometimes I'm tempted to get some other handgun-caliber molds and make some boolits to sell - most of the guys I know that shoot cast boolits don't cast their own, they buy them mail-order. Can't figure that out. They're missing half the fun.

I've probably owned over a hundred in my life, but right now I have around 20. I tend to unload the ones I seldom use or no longer have guns for. Moulds sitting gathering dust have no value to me, so every now and then I'll put them aside and sell them and use the money for other moulds (or beer)!

Hi, my name is Rintinglen, and I'm an addict.... I think I have around 40, but I am not sure. I have .358 molds ranging from 75 grains up to 200 grains, I think about 11. I have 4 44 molds. 4 45 molds for pistol. 5 for the 45-70. 3 for my 38-55. 1 for a 32-40--(and I don't even own a gun in that caliber.) 7 for 32-20. 12 or so, 30 caliber molds. I sent a check out for another. I am an addict.

I got to thinking and I can't imagine a gun that I can't make a boolit for.
Maybe .17 cal or 600 nitro or larger. Oh I do have a .58 minie. And the .690"rb.
I have at least one mould for each gun, naturally.
At this point I think I have all I need.
I'd like to have a 400 grain .408".
And Ranch Dogs 170 grain 360".
A decent 8mm 200 grain.
A 120 grain .257". and so on and on and on.

Anyone want to talk swaging dies?

I keep an excel spreadsheet with mold info and notes. I update it about once a month with new acquisitions and dispositions.

Right now I have 48, but I've sold 31 in the last 6 weeks. I plan to sell some more and continue to focus on getting "what I want" instead of just what's available.

I fully expect to settle happily with something around 150 molds, and then just add to that number as I see something I've wanted but couldn't find, or I develop a new "need" with the arrival of a new project. I also expect it to take several years to acquire everything I'm looking for now.

For example, I currently have 10 .32 caliber molds, without counting duplicates, and I can think of at least 3 more that I "need" (Of course, the .32 is an affliction unto itself)

Haven't counted in 20-30 years, occasionally get more, added 7 this week. Have eyes on Lee 6-cav .358 tumble lube wc. My old wc is a 1-cav Lyman. I worked overtime jobs away from home for years and often sent things home when I was far away.

Like so many others, I started with just one--I got a Lyman for the specific purpose of putting my .32 Win Spl back in the game on the cheap. Next thing I know somebody sprinkled my mold and little box of WW's with rabbit dust. Now my lead supply is up somewhere over a ton in various states of ingots to raw/unsmelted and I really can't count all my molds off the top of my head without going out to the shop and looking. How did that happen??? Oh yah, I remember--I started hanging around all of you on a regular basis... ;)

My mould count changes. I recently sold off a bunch of 2 cavity moulds, but replaced them with 4,6, and an 8 cavity mould! Now casting with a single or dual cavity mould just seems like so much work, compared to the multi cavity moulds that make a bunch of boolits real quick! Of course the other side to that coin is that I now have enough of the boolits from that 8 cavity mould that I probably won't need to use it again for a year or more! Or I can just go ahead, and start shooting a whole lot more than I do now! :)

I honestly don't know how many I have in total, because I only pay attention to the few I am using at any given time. I do know that I started buying up all the different moulds I could find for the .32 cal rifle bullets I use in my .32-40 and ended up with with about 10 for it. Kinda like size, I guess, it's not the number you have but what you do with the ones you have! :D

When I first responded to this poll I had about 12 moulds I think. Now I just checked, and the number has grown to 31, and I'm getting another one in the mail tomorrow (I hope). Originally when I assembled my new workbench I had used the 2 lower drawers to hold my moulds, now I have both of them full, and had to use another shelf in the closet to hold some moulds (I keep my 'good' moulds in the drawers, and my Lee moulds in the closet!).

I'm running out of space for all these moulds, and might have to resort to taking some of them off their handles to save space, something I would rather not do, I like having each mould with it's own set of handles.

I think I'm down to 9 or 10. I only cast for 4 calibers so all I look for is a couple in different weights for each caliber that will shoot well. I have a tendency to just cast with the one that works the best and meets my needs. Not saying I wouldn't try a new one, but pretty happy with the ones I have. I don't need a drawer full of molds I never use.

I had to sit down and think about how many. Best I can figure is 14 , but I would like to have several more. Trouble is a lack of disposable income on my part and outrageous prices sellers are asking , even for used moulds. I looked at a group buy yesterday but the cost of a 2 cavity mould, handles and shipping was still out of my reach. I just keep looking and every now and then find a mould at a affordable price. The fun is in the hunt.

A wise caster would have one mold for each caliber (30-30, 308, 30-06 all could get along fine on one mold, for example 311041) or two if you had a rifle and handgun in the same caliber (35 Remington, 38/357 would have a 200 gr rifle mold and a 158gr handgun mold). On the other hand, how many of us are wise enough to pick the best mold first.

Ok, I have to ask. Why in the world would someone need more than one mold for each caliber?

I'm sure others can answer better than I can, but my first thought is:
What does need have to do with it?

1. Multiple guns in a single caliber.
2. Multiple designs in a single caliber.

I'm sure there are others.

My Dad cast for over 50 years until he passed away, I have been casting as long as I could shoot, at age 6 and now I am passed the 1/2 century mark. Counting the collection from my dad plus mine (still growing). I am over 250 moulds and still don't have enough. Just bought one from Swede last week, I think this is an illness that will follow me to the grave....BTW the moulds go with me when I leave.

I don't remember what my selection was when I first posted in this thread. I now have 24.

As an aside, I have been very tired and not interested in much lately because of working MAJOR overtime. Tonight I pulled out my box of molds and was opening them and just looking at the cavities. Like a kid looking at his baseball card collection. It perked me up and made me feel better.

When I started I too started with just 1 (.308 1-Cav) mould and it was about 4 - 5 years I think before I got any more.

I picked up 5 or 6 (used but good) one time at the gun store for something like $5.00 each by buying them all, over 1/2 of them were for guns I did not own (yet), still do not own guns for some of them.
