I have always like the movie and the ethics DeNiro tried to instil in his friends. What cal was the rifle? Just curious. I've never owned a 700, probably a good place to start. My bet is (1) 30-06, (2) 270.

Me thinks likewise. I seem to remember he'd been in the Army and mentioned the .30-06.

Excellent, its 2006, my son now has my 3006, my landrover's license plates are SP3006, the 3006 has been my fav cartridge for most of my adult life (many, many years, lol) and I've never owned a civilian Remington (have 2x M17s and a Mosin Nagant by Remington).

This has got to be an omen, I must rush out and buy a 3006 Remington 700 BDL and a 3-9 Leupold.

The rifle could have been any cal. The hunting scenes in the movie were not the most accurate. I have lived in Pa. all my life and while I haven't seen all the mountains, none of the Pa. mountains I have seen look like those in the movie. Also the only deer we have are whitetails and the deer in the movie were certainly not whitetails. On the other hand, the scenes in the steel mill were from the Pittsburgh area. I remember reading that in the newspaper when they were making the movie

Just after making a solemn promise to myself that I was not gonna buy any guns, because I have spent squillions (well lots anyway!) lately, I tripped over a 3006 Remington 700 BDL yesterday. Oh save me from temptation! Mick.

Ya that looked like a fallow deer from a game farm or something in that movie. Always thought that was funny.
