I bought one of these casting "furnaces" from Lyman (factory reconditioned). In hindsight (always 20-20), I probably should have spent the money to get one with a temperature control. So, two questions (all the Lyman tech folks are out at the Shot Show this week):

How do you adjust the temperature -- just by adding new metal (to cool it) or just let it keep cooking to raise the temperature?

Where should the heating element be positioned relative to the pot -- sitting on the bottom, up a half-inch, or? (The clip that secures the heating element was loose when the pot arrived. I can tighten it up, but don't want to end up with the heating element in the wrong position.

TIA

If your lead furnace does not have a temp control you could wire in a light dimmer switch and do it that way. Ron

Or a pid controller. I wired my lyman up to it and love it. I set it to say 750 and it doesnt really move off of that.

OK, I'll bite -- what's a pid controller?
