I would like to have a plain base 30 caliber mold of 180 to 200 grains to use for lever action silhouette and long range plinking. I don't need to push them that fast and no longer see a need for gas checks.

I read somewhere while looking for PB designs, it might have been in the NRA cast bullet book, that heavy PB 30 caliber bullets won't shoot good. This is a questionable statement at best.

What has been your experience with heavy weight PB 30's? What molds and velocities are possible with good accuracy? I am looking for 1200 to 1400 FPS.

He refered to .30 cal.

Why wouldn't plain base boolits work at lower velocities?? I there is a sticky about this.

Doesn't list heavier boolits though.

If you can settle for 170 gr. the LEE 309 170 fp works well for me in 7.5X55 and 7.62X51 and although it is a gc form I shoot it without checks. No problems.

I would think that twist would have the most bearing on what boolit would or wouldn't work at your desired velocity. So...what is the twist of your rifle?

What cartridges? 30WCF, 30US, 30-06, and maybe 308. All are 10" twist. I will check out the links.

he posted lever action and 30 cal so 30/30. would be it.
I would try lees C309-170-F.without GC.

i'd look at some lyman designs.
under 15-1600 with a plain base should be easily doable.
it's done in pistol cal leverguns, the 38-55 and 45-70 with regularity.
the 30's shouldn't be any different.

RCBS has a 150 grain cowboy mold that looks good. I have had excellent results with boolits that weight in all the .30 calibers I have tried it in ( I have used the Lee 150FP), and calibers have been 30-30,.308, and 30-06.
