My 6.5 Jap carbine grew over the years. Gunsmith says slug measures .268-.271 across the flats. Anybody out there got any ascast in those dias? Have lots of 30 cal cast or jacketed bullets or other stuff for trade. Thanks CW

I order a Lee "Cruise Missle" from Midsouth .I waited about 13 months for it. It was worth the wait. It measures .270 .I use it in my JaP sporter(My first deer rifle my father converted when I was 12) i am 53 now. I use 4759 powder with it. Get about 1450 fps. Try to get this mold. Rick

Get a 270 mould and size down. It ain't "normal" but it works.

I've heard of Jap rifles that were used in China being found to have bores of .270 or larger. I suspect some of these may have been made or rebarreled using Chinese 6.8 barrel blanks.
The Chinese had been developing their own national ammo and rifle, a Mauser rifle in 6.8MM. Every country seemed to consider having a ammo type specific to their own rifles to be a point of honor back then.
The Chinese were armed with a great many different rifles and calibers. The closest they came to standardization was the Mauser and its copies in 8mm.

"Gunsmith says slug measures .268-.271 across the flats."????????
Your gunsmith should be able to get a LOT closer than that for groove dia., unless he meant .268'@ muzzle and .271" throat? Any how I think Bret has given you some good advice with the 270 mold recommend.
I DO NOT own a 6.5 Jap, but a friend does and I gave him some cruise missles @ .270", he showed me a target with complete sideways impacts, and gave me the rest of the bullets back. I assumed the 172 grain CM was too long for the 1 in 9(approx) twist of the Jap rifle, but one should never assume. I believe the military ball was loaded with a 139 gr fmj at about 2500 fps and I would get a 270 mold of 125-150 grains and size it just under throat diameter.

I sized some .277 cast to .269 for my Carcano, those are the only bullets I could get on paper.

I got mine from midsouthshooters.they seem to keep them in stock.
1 X 9 should stabelize the bullet.or you could cut the mold down to 160 gr.
I will check what a factory 6.5 uses. I have some original.

the 6.5 swede/cruiser is same length as the 130 gr jap.I just checked it.but the forward part is fatter.so the twist should work the same.
I have a few original 6.5 loaded.

Maybe the gunsmith meant it was out of round.

Carl,
I don't know what I did with the email you sent me, and I don't think I replied. I'd be happy to send you some of my 6.5mm bullets, but they are as cast at .267" at the very largest, and I'm sizing them to .266" I think you'd be asking for a lot of leading issues with my boolits, you should give some of these suggestions a shot (pun intended) :)

Carl use this link to calculate barrel twist rquired for cruise missle sized .270" and gas check installed it is 1.256" long. At 1600 fps a 1 in 8.1 is required, 1940 fps a 1 in 8.9 and 1950 and above a 1;9 twist.
