Just got the new 2010 Cabelas shooting catalog and saw a new Lyman melter. It's called the Big Dipper 10lb furnace? It looks very similar to the Lee dipper pots. I wonder if Lee is making it for them.

Yup, another reason I have a low opinion of Lyman. Sad to see, I'll say that.

No matter who makes it, it's the cheapest 10 lb melter I've seen in over 20 years.
Would make a good pre-melter to keep the regular pot running.

I have the free smaller lyman that came with the dipper inget mould and 4500 as well as the Lyman cast boolit book. The package was just 15 bucks over the 4500 alone with a sale price
It is not that one.
It was this one and was 138 on sale and had a discount as well if over a certian amount of $$ on the order.

Can not beat $138 hope it is at least ok
by it self

I'd be amazed if LEE makes them either. Generic LEE type pots are all over the internet. Here's an example:

There are versions of these pots we've never seen.

Definitely looks like Lee construction, but it would be an improvement over the Lyman contraption with the heating coils inside the crucible. Those were subject to being in contact with the casting dipper and interfering with stirring and cleaning of the pot. Ten pounds is a reasonable amout of melt to work with, but my question would be in the quality area, specifically whether/how long would the thermostat remain reliable/reasonably accurate. $35 isn't too bad unless it turns out to be another "Cracker-Jax" box prize. Anyway at least it won't drip. LLS

And for less than $20.00 you can get an open coil hot plate of at least 1K watts and a stainless pot at Walmart.

Here is a web address that has good prices on Lee lead melters. www.fmreloading.com located in Ohio.

I HOPE it's made by Lee and not a Lee knock-off from you-know-where.

I HOPE it's made by Lee and not a Lee knock-off from you-know-where.

I got one a couple of weeks ago. Right under the "Lyman" name and address....There it is....In big bold letters.....MADE IN CHINA"...

It struggles to get up to 700 degrees. I haven't decided whether or not to bother calling Lyman yet...'spose I should give them a chance to make it right. I was planning to just use it for melting sprues and rejects and as a feeder pot for my RCBS. I still want a ladle-only pot but will go with the Lee magnum melter....At least it's made here.

As an up-date to the above.........The lady at Lyman cust. svc was very nice on the phone and said to send it back for a replacement. Now my decision will be whether or not it's worth the shipping charge to return it or should I just use it as a feeder pot....
