Hi all:

I am fairly new to casting. I just cast a batch with a new LEE 6 cav 124 TL for 9MM. I have weighed several of the output and I am getting about 115 grains, with a hardness of 16.6. Does any one know if this seems correct. The alloy is a 50/50 mix of lino and PB.

Thanks

Richard

I just used mine for the first time this AM
Mine is the round nose tumble lube. Almost pure wheel weights. They weigh between 115 and 117. I just put 10 thru my 9 and they worked fine.

Thanks.

What was the load you used? and was it based on the bullet weight? I would think this is what I should do.

I have some 25 year old Unique I need to use up. Speer book says 4.4 gr to 6.0.
I am using 4.5, and they cycled just fine and not bad on accuracy.

I have that mould and it has always poured light boolits for me. I've poured pure lead, I've poured store-bought #2, I've poured straight WW, and I've poured my "super alloy" which has a high degree of lino and tin in it. Doesn't matter--boolits come out well less than 124 grains. What's more, I've had not-so-good luck with the boolits. Nothing I try helps out with accuracy. I normally only load j-bullets for 9mm anymore these days.

Thanks. We will be using these for practice for IDPA style shooting. As most of the practice is at 'defensive' range, i.e. 5 to 15 yards, accuracy is not so important.

Once I start loading for the 30-30 I will be paying a LOT more attention.

Thanks to all. I think I will load these as a 115 RN and see how they run...

I've shot thousands of rounds loaded with the 124 TL RN Lee bullet. It's been very accurate in a M&P, CZ and my current STI Trojan. I weighed a few bullets just now and they weighted between 123.5 and 124.5 grains with a light coat of LLA on them. The loads I used in all three pistols was 3.6gr of W231 with a COAL of 1.125"

My best offhand group with this bullet through my STI, offhand at 7 yards is .50". From the bench at 7 yards, 5 shots: (Just looked at my spreadsheet and I did shoot the STI at 25 yards offhand once and this load shot a 2.5" group.)

My TL-356-124-RN-2R drops at 124.5 and functions flawlessly in my CZ 75B over 3.5 gr. Bullseye.

Cheap and plenty accurate for 7 - 15 yard range work.

Just got done with a batch of about 200 of those 124gr tl LEE boolits from a two hole mold. They average 121gr as dropped. Loaded some with 4.3gr of Unique and got good functioning from a High Power pistol. Accuracy and velocity not checked yet.

The diameter is more important than weight. Of the most commonly used alloys, wheel weights (.5%
tin, 4% antimony, 95% lead) will produce bullets having
the smallest diameter and heaviest weight, with
such bullets running approximately .3% smaller in
diameter and 3% heavier than bullets cast with
Taracorp's metal. Linotype will produce bullets with the
largest diameter and lightest weights.
