Has anyone succssefully used buckshot in a 22 cal. centerfire and or in a 30-30 or 33 Winchester?
Accuracy?
Thanks!

If you do some searching, I think you will find there are quite a few people who have done just that. Usually with light loads using powders like Bullseye, Red Dot, Unique, etc. I haven't done it but have thought about it for a number of .30 - .32 calibers.

I did it years ago with a .243 Winchester and #4 buckshot. It was a long time ago, but as I recall I just used a primer. Accuracy was, well, if I was inside a barn I was sure to hit a wall, usually the one I pointed toward.

I regularly shoot .312 cast shot in a Ruger 77, .308. 3 grains of Bullseye, terrific gallery load. Rats, squirrels, racoons, bunny hoppers, etc. I shoot about 3/4 inch at 25 yards.

I've stuck a pellet with primer only.

I use 312 rb with 3-5grns of trail boss in my 30-30 & Mosin nagants. It'll sure get rid of a opossom quick,, and won't wake the neighbors.

I use .313 RB in .30cal and use .22RB for air rifle in .22 with a grain or two bulls ey. Also the .22 pellets over a primer only for indoor shooting in the hornet or .223

I know it's a no-no to put anything in front of a blank, but a friend and I got a bunch of 7.62x54R surplus blank ammo, dirt cheap (think less than the cost of primers).

We found that if you drop a piece of #0 buckshot in the chamber, then a blank, it shoots it out there pretty good. We could get better than 2" groups at 25 yards.

I have a series of RB molds, one for each of my rifle calibers. I use straight lead free plumber's solder to cast RBs and shoot these in my centerfire rifles. Sometimes, just 4thellovit, I'll cast some RBs that are oversize and push them through a sizer die for a smaller caliber. They come out looking like Buffalo Ballets. A quick T/L, load over 5 gr. of B/E and it's 'bout like shooting a .22 LR. Kinda fun to hear an '06 "pop"!

I have a Armory mold dated 1901 that casts .30 cal roundballs.

I figure it's for gallery loads in the Krag.

Haven't cast any yet to see what they mic at.

i tend to enjoy making 'garage loads' for my mosin nagant and my 22 hornet. for the m-n 1 to 3 grs of red dot or trail boss is the ticket. i also have a couple of slug molds, a 90 gr. wadcutter for the 32 s\w , and a standard 180 gr 30 cal mold, both of which respong very well with 'small' charges of powder. the 180s wil make considerably less noise than a 22, penetrate 1 1\4 decking board at 50 yards, and do it with about 3 1-2 grs of red dot. for the hornet, take some old cases, drill out the base w/ a 1/4 inch drill, counter sink with a 3/8 drill untill a shotgun primer will chamber, and you can shoot #5 buckshot, or preferably 22 pellets, to your hearts content. the only problem with all this is your chamber WILL get filthy, leading to difficult chambering and extraction, and with the hornet, an occasional 'blown' pellet. carry a cleaning rod, and the come out easily. the hornet in particular could make a good squirrel popper, since it makes almost no noise and comes very near equalling a 22 short!

There's a good bit of information on using buckshot in 7.62 rifles here...

When I was a kid Dad had a 311 round ball mold we used over 4 grs of pistol #6 in Krag and 30 06 for squirrels and rats, should work in 30 30 too. These days sub Bullseye for the old Du Pont powder. Haven't thought of this in nearly 50 years, wonder if that mold is still here?

Some years ago, the Speer manual listed round ball loads for several of the popular pistol cartridges - I played around with them a bit in 44 and 357 and had a lot of fun with no recoil and little noise.

Waters Pet loads has a whole section on this yo might want to try and read. I use 310 round balls in my Argentine rifle and it works swell for indoor practice and pests up to 50 yards.
