What pray tell is the composition of lead-free solder and is it worth a darn for casting alloys?

Treat it as pure tin. It is just fine for use in casting.

It's tin and antimony. Couldn't tell you the exact percentages.

Every company has its own secret formula but most are at least 90% Tin and may contain Copper, Antimony, Silver, Zinc, Nickle or Bismuth (and maybe others) in most any combination.

If you to a plumbing supplier they should have a MSDS that will tell what it contains, but probably not the exact ammounts. Ask for 95-5 and you'll get 95% Sn and 5% Sb.

Current price for most lead-free is eight to ten dollars/lb. If you get the 1/4 lb rolls at the hardware store it'll probably cost over twenty bucks/lb.

You can go to the maker's web site and find out the exact composition, but for our purposes, it's close neough to call it 95-5 tin and antimony. I weigh out 140 gr. (2% of 1 lb.) then measure the length, and add one length each time I add an ingot of WW.
