My son Barry shot at a deer tonight (just before dark) with his 300 Win. mag. and a Hornady 150 gr. Interlock factory load. It screamed through the air so loud it cleared the deer out of the 200 acre wheat field and echoed off the trees. I first thought it must have tumbled, but it hit where it should have at 400 yds. Deer turned as he fired, so it was a miss, but was judged by other son to have been on target. Other rounds from the same box were fired before and after that one without the sound effects. Mystified what could have been the cause. He then had a doe take a step and come between him and a good buck. Good thing he had a doe tag. Any opinions/guesses on the scream?

a nick in the jacket could have caused it, I don't know...

That scream is the bullet's war cry, programmed in at the Hornady factory to help hunters intimidate the type of game a .300 Winchester Magnum is designed to harvest. Maybe not entirely necessary on lil' ol' Bambi, but it sure cleared 'em out, didn't it? :kidding:

That was the round that sneaked out of the box to watch cartoons on saturday morning.:kidding:

New one to me, I know you ar supposed to be able to hear projectiles from Naval Gunfire or artillery if the conditions are right, i.e. big enough. And you can hear bullets slapping the paper when pulling targets, but I have never heard of anyone hearing the bullet.

See what happens when you shoot J-word boolits!

You don't have that problem with cast!

The bullet had ambitions of killing a Boone and Crockett buck and it could see that it was heading for a doe.

The sound is caused by the air moving over or through a flaw in the bullet. The Mongols used to design arrows that would whistle with different tones and used them for signaling purposes.

Doesn't make sense, seems as if the bullet should have reached the deer before the sound anyway. Or at least the same time because the bullet was making the noise.

The only time I have heard this is when I was shooting some 405gr. Lee 45-70 loads that had defects in the bullet body. I loaded them anyway. They didn't scream, but they "whirred" all the way to the target.

If it was "screaming" there was something wrong with the bullet, likely part of the jacket had pealed back. The chances of the shot being accurate are not good. We used to get something like that in artillery when the rotating band would break off. An 8" howitzer shell literally screaming down range will get your attention.

Had the same thing happen with a .22 rimfire a long time ago. Never noticed if there was anything wrong with the cartridge before I chambered it.

Probably at least 35 or more years ago, I loaded a bunch of Herters (either 110 or 130 HP's) for a friends 270, and they all whistled down range, but they were on target and stayed in an inch and a half or so at 100. Who knows?

Only heard it once while shooting a 6MM in a heavy snowfall.

At Camp Perry during the Highpower rifle stage, if one listens to Rapid Fire on Rodriguez Range from Viale Range, the bullets whistle. It's like over 100 whistles blowing at the same time.

One of the musket shooters that used to come compete in the regional ML matches modified his boolits so they would whistle. It is claimed some units did that to their Minie balls during the uncivil war.
Don't know what his modification was, but always meant to ask.

One can rest assured that there was a manufacturing defect that created a small pocket catching air on that bullet.

Wish I had been there to observe/listen.

44 Man, the deer didn't run until after the shot. The does and young bucks don't pay much attention to the sound of a shot unless it is close to them. The older bucks usually leave when they hear a shot. The does often go smell the ground where a missed shot hits.

OK, that's better. I was wondering if it was superman noise!

Barry went back this evening and got the buck in the snow, 35 mph wind, 25 degrees, 225 yds, but used his AR 10. Nice eight point. This old man stayed by the fire. LOL

While shooting the pistol phase of Camp Perry on the right hand of range three when you are scoreing targets you can hear the 45 slugs on range four on there way to the 50 yd line. Sounds like agry bees!
