Choosing only one, what center fire caliber do you shoot the most?

My favorite would be shooting a 38 spl 158 gr SWC in revolver or rifle. They're also very economical to shoot yet versatile. I doubt I'll ever make a trip to the range without taking one with me.

I do enjoy various other larger calibers but shooting 38's out of one of the 357 revolvers is popular around here.

I shoot 32 caliber revolvers most often; 32-20, 32 Short Colt, 32 S&W, 32 S&W Long, 32 Magnum, and 327 Magnum.

I don't know that I have a favorite caliber right now, maybe .44 special, but I sure am glad to see such a positive response on the .32's, since I have an SP-101 in .327 Federal I have not shot much (yet). Good to hear.

45 Colt. I like it the most, and shoot it the most.

I have shot all 9 of the above listed calibers, and quite a few others. I am currently loading and casting for 5 of the above calibers. I like all 9 and see a suitable role for each. The 45Colt makes its way to the range almost every trip, usually in a SA Ruger frame.

The .357 is my overall favorite, I have 2 rifles and 3 pistols in that or .38 spl cal. I think it is probably the most versatile cartridge out there. It does everything well from light target to medium game.

Yep could be, but I've never witnessed anyone at my Range shooting the Big Bores endlessly, much less an all day long shooting session. I frequent my range often.

So you're saying that you shoot your 454 Cal more than any other as implied in the Poll caption? If you're shooting lead boolits I would like go visit your fun spot.

None the less, an interesting Poll - I think.

While I shoot a lot of .38s and .45 ACPs, I guess I'd have to call the .44 Spl my current "favorite" 'cause my two favorite all around handguns are a S&W M24 and a Ruger OM Vaquero.

It changes from year to year, but I chose the .44 Mag as I seem to spend more time with it lately. I have a number of options, but prefer the single action revolver over any other type of handgun.

The weight and balance of the single action .44 is well suited to controlling recoil but the weight is not excessive, as I have found with the .357 Mag.

The loads can go from mild to wild to suit the intended use. I'm more than a little impressed with the 310 gr boolits that I have been working with recently.

Even through the current shortages, I have been able to find good amounts of fired brass. There are still a lot more folks shooting the .44 than are handloading for it.

Another vote for the 45 Colt (in a single action of course- Ruger Blackhawk preferably)!
45 ACP would be 2nd, followed by 38 Spl (both in revolvers).

38 S&W is equal to 38 Spl in quantities fired.

Never show up to a fight with anything less than a 45 if at all possible, and make every shot count once the fight has begun.

I had my tongue planted in my cheek when I posted this.

Yes, it's not unusual for me to fire 200 rounds per trip. I've probably gone through a ton of lead over the years just through my .454's, and I own 4 of them.

I will admit that I don't personally know anyone else in my area that shoots one, and many times I get an audience while shooting them at the range I belong to.

This would have been post #22 to this thread if I hadn't gotten interrupted last evening.

I also take a .22 Smith revolver with me to the range. I use it as a warmup to re-train my trigger finger to remember whatever it forgot since the last session. But since you said "centerfire"...

I like the .32 H&R Magnum in my Smiths, and I usually take 586 Smith in .357, almost always with .38 Special-level loads in .357 brass. I like the .44 Magnum and find the .44 Special more "average" than "Special" (I know, sacrilege), but my "go-to" revolver is the .41 Magnum with a Keith boolit at 900 fps. Lots o' penetration and certainly enough diameter to do the job.

I'm not a fan of auto-pistols because I hate chasing brass.

10mm!!! most definitly.

Great loads in my 610 revolver and lots of firepower in my Glock 20's.

I cast my own LBT 200 gr WFN's with GC's and those doing 1,200 fps out of a Glock 20 with 19 more behind it is a lot of firepower.

Being the fact that the Poll question is asking what caliber / round you put down range, the most..... I find it interesting that no one at all has voted for the 380 or 40 cal. In my locale 'round here, all the brass to be picked up is either 9mm or 40 and lots of it. 380 brass is found, seldom.

I know that factory 380 ammo is scarce so thats possibly a good indicator according to the Poll or then, is it.

Again, the Poll question is: What round do you send down range - most ?

Its not a question of choice (no reason to get nervous ;) ) although I know the thread Title may be a little misleading if you don't read closely.

I can't answer this question as I shoot all my pistols pretty much the same amount so don't have one that I shoot most. Unless you consider the 22 lr caliber which I don't as it is for hunting and tin can shooting.
With the current shortage of everything I shoot a lot less than I used to and if everything had to be put in one caliber I am not sure which I would choose as some work in pistol and rifle and some are just plain make large holes. So it would most likely depend on which one I grabbed at the moment.

Ruger BH .45 Colt. It can plink with little recoil (my 12 yr old loves it with cowboy loads) or surpass the .44 mag for hunting. Pretty versatile IMO. Another fine choice would be the .357 mag, fine accuracy in a good gun, mine's a 6" M19, and can do 90% of what a handgun is good for while being frugal with the powder and lead.... My reasoning for this: Maybe some here are like me and hate trying to locate their precious brass when they are done banging away at the range. I shoot an over under at the trap/skeet/clays range for the same reason....I do not lose none of my old style AA hulls that way.

I voted 38spcl, but the 38spcl , 357mag and 357max are all too close to really pick a true winner at this house. For the first time in alot of years I can make the following statement............there are no longer any semi-auto CF handguns that live in my house. I sold/traded off all the brass losers and have went back to revolvers/singleshots exclusively. Did I mention I hate losing brass?;-)

Welcome to the board, CoolBarrelBill.

I'm late to this party, and the question is a conflicted one for this here mid-caliber addict. What caliber gets carried the most--what caliber gets shot the most--which caliber is most useful--which one is easiest to make accurate?

Despite my affection for the 32s, the 357 Magnum wins out for all-around favorite. There is almost always a can of emptied 357 brass laying around, waiting to be tumbled and refilled. The caliber just does so many things so darn well.

I notice I was the first to select .380. It was my selection not because I would select it first for a gunfight, but because it is the one I always have on me. If I would be heading for a gunfight, I would take my 12 ga.

I own 2 centerfire handguns. A 10mm EAA Witness, and a 10mm EAA Witness Elite Match.

However, I will be adding another to the stable soon. A 10mm Fortis Bren Ten when they are released at the end of January.

When I come across the right one, I will be adding a S&W 1076 as well, and someday I will probably also have a 2011 frame built up in 10mm.

For reloading I would choose something like the .357/.38.

For target shooting I'd choose the .45 ACP in a target 1911 model.

For self defense hands down the .40 S&W with high capacity mags.

I voted .45 ACP because I almost always bring one to the range with me and put a few rounds down range. Close second would have to be .38 spc too, I always put a cylinder of 3 thru my j-frame, in addition to whatever else I've brought out.

Actually, so far this new year 22 hornet and .45 colt are the current centerfire winners, but It'll even out a bit more when it warms up a few degrees.

I have to go "other".

I have a 4" Smith 500.
With a 325g "almost full wadcutter" mold (huuuuuuge meplat), 8-10 g Trail Boss, maybe 800 fps - (have to drag out the chrono!).

Now thats FUN - big holes, plenty of weight to smack solid targets, easy on the recoil.

Eats through a pot of alloy casting a bunch though !

On the more normal side, I'd have to go 45 Colt; 4" S&W 25, 4" Anaconda, 4 5/8 Blackhawk, Win 94, and an EMF 1860 Henry _ oh yea, an American Arms derringer - OUCH!

I voted for .38 Special. With 158 SWCs they shoot great. Very economical, doesn't beat your hand or the gun up, did I mention that they are cheap to load? Fun fun fun with all sorts of wheelguns. Same bullet in .357 a little more powder, just as much fun.

They should add .38 and .357 together.

I like my .45 ACP Colt 1911 best, fun, historical (it was my grandfathers pistol, late 20s manufacture) easy to reload, and the kids (children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews etc...) think it is way cool. Usually start them on the .22LR Ruger Bearcat as it is nice and small SA revolver and fun too. That is my second favorite handgun. 10 ga

44mag, have several. It can be loaded hot or mild, light or heavy, and 44spl leaves a grease ring

It could be because the 44 spl case is short in a magnum cylinder. I prefer the 44 special as it slams my hand less than the magnum and it does everything that I want a large caliber pistol to do and with my 255 grain bullets it is just fun.

a.squibload
05-07-2010, 08:35 PM
That's what I mean, you can load the mag cases to spl parameters,
and not have the extra grease to clean out of the cylinders.

Or load 'em hot and shoot bricks. POOOF!

I agree with you about the .45 Colt and ruger single actions they always go with me. I shot the Blackhawks and Super Blackhawks for years then I shot a Bisley. Things changed

What Jim said. The very low numbers for 38 Special and 357 Magnum are kinda surprising, but the favor of the 45s really isn't. A year later, the 357 still reigns supreme hereabouts, but the 40 S&W is making inroads since I scrounged the Glock 23 in January.

I didn't pick the 357 mag to be my favorite on the basis of velocity, ballistics, availability, variety of projectiles and/or molds available, etc., although I could have. Somehow, it just sort of happened.
I carry a 3" Ruger SP 101 in 357 mag, I have a 4 1/2" 50th anniversary Blackhawk in 357 mag, and I have a 357 mag barrel for my Handi Rifle. I just shoot the caliber the most, but I have realized that I really like it. It's flexible if you handload, and it does everything I want.
That equals my favorite !

Since I no longer compete IPSC/IDPA I shoot .357 almost exclusively (.32ACP for requal).

When/if I build another 1911 CCO that might change.

I don't really have a favorite. I shoot them all at the range. For CC, I choose the (largest) pistol that best fits depending on season, my attire, and where I'm going.

I pick from 32ACP (Beretta TomCat), 380 (Bersa Thunder), 9mm (EAA Witness) and 45ACP (Sig 220). Although, since both my 9mm and my 45 have full size frames, I have been CC'ing the 45 more often lately.

I've been trying to figure this one out for over 30 years. I don't see it listed, but a 22 LR auto is hard to beat for sheer fun. I have two currently, a Smith 22A topped with a red dot sight and a German Sport Pistol 1911. The GSP is certainly not the most accurate pistol I've ever fired (prolly more to do with fixed sights and aging eyes) but it is a blast to shoot. I find the 22A to be as accurate as any of the three Ruger MKII's I've owned. I realize that says a lot, but I regulary practice with a 40% hunter pistol silly wet pig swinger at 50 yards and going 10 for 10 on my hind legs is almost monotonous.

As to favorite centerfire, I'm torn between 357 and 45 ACP. I have a Model 19, a 10" octagonal Contender and a Taurus Gaucho. In 45 ACP I've a Taurus Tracker and a RIA 1911. Choice of what I play with hinges more on the particular gun than on a caliber/chambering.

Like Waynem34, I shoot and reload for all of the calibers listed. In fact I also have a long gun for all the calibers listed, except the .380. I have a fondness for each and every caliber, but the 45 Colt is the one I simply enjoy shooting the most. There are others that are more accurate (My S&W 610 10mm) and more powerful (Taurus Raging Bull .454 or .480) or that kick less (S&W Model 10 .38 spl), but the 45 Colt is the one I go to. Loads from Trail Boss to 7.5 grains of Universal Clays, pushing a 250 grain RNFP will take care of anything I could need it for in Southeast Texas.

I shoot 32 hr,45 acp,44 spl,45 colt, rem 44 cap and ball, but the one that I shoot the most, like the most is the 45 colt. It is the most accurate and the most fun to shoot of any handgun I own. Several deer and coyotes have fell to it along with rabbits and grouse. I like that it doesn't tear the small game up too bad but still does a decent job on deer. It probably doesn't hurt that it's packaged in my favorite revolver, a ruger NV with 7-1/2" barrel. I shoot a 255 at around 1000' fps and its pleasant to shoot but still feels powerful.

When I was young, I loved .44 mag. Then .41 mag. Still love .45 acp. But as I get older, eyesight worsens, less arm muscles, I am prefering the lowly .380 and .38 special. But even stiff .380 now seems a bit harsh. Getting old sucks.

I voted .45 Colt, which is strange since I don't own a single firearm chambered in .45 Colt. But, after going completely off the deep end with .454 Casull and .460 S&W which were both so expensive to shoot I started using homebrew .45 Colt as a reduced power practice load, to my astonishment I discovered that for most of my actual handgun shooting applications .45 Colt is just dandy. I may have to break down and buy an actual .45 Colt revolver one of these days.

Silly as it sounds, my Walther PPKS in 380 is not that much fun to shoot - recoil wise. I'd much rather shoot my 1911's. They just don't seem quite as "snappy". The 1911's are a more comfortable push... I'm shooting light charges of Red Dot and 200 gr boolits, though. enjoy Mike

I guess I would have to say 44 Mag since I have had this thing about Super Blackhawks for the past 35 years or so. Before that it was the 41 Mag for about 15 years. I don't shoot all that many full mag loads anymore but still enjoy the ones I do. Most of mine are mid-range with Herco.

Have fun with this stuff.

Just a noob here, but my most liked is the 9mm because it was such a pain in the a**se to get a load that worked. [smilie=b:

All the other pistol calibre's .38/44/45 etc have a list a mile long of recommendations that are found here & many other sites that work well.

But the 9mm that's a doosy.

Have just recently set up to cast my own, haven't started as yet, winter snow is just around the corner.

Also decided to change powders & with the new cast boolits on the way, the fun I guess is about to start all over again, getting a load that works. :lovebooli

As much as I enjoy my 45 long Colt revolvers, the one that always go out the door with me is the 4" N frame chambered for the 45 ACP, so that cartidge will get my vote. It is also the cartridge that I shoot most frequently, as I have several revolvers chambered for it. Try as I might, I have never been able to develop the "warm and fuzzies" for an self-loader, but that is a topic for another thread.

Being that the question was for which one is shot the most, it's hands down .40 S&W because that's my competition pistol's caliber. Almost all IPSC Limited shooters use .40 for logistical reasons. .45 ACP is my favorite and if it weren't for the logistical issues with IPSC/USPSA Limited there would probably be a lot of people shooting .45. Its recoil is less snappy so followup is faster and bullet holes are WAY easier to see on the run but you can only get 15 rounds in the magazine (assuming the typical 2011 style guns) so on many stages it would require an additional mag change.

Shooting for fun I go for .45 ACP, .45 Colt, .44 Mag and .38s in a .357.

I'm tired of being treated like some red headed step child. Your poll is discriminating against lovers of th 41. There must be some law that prohibits discrimination based on caliber.

My favorite pistol round is the 41 Smith & Wesson Magnum and I'm proud of it.

I didn't vote because it changes. Lately the 45ACP because I'm breaking in my first one and have put in excess of 500 rds down range with it. From 9mmMak to 32-20 to 38/357 to 40S&W to 41LC to 44Mag to 45ACP all are loaded for and shot. The 7.62x25 largely shoots surplus, but I do load for it as well.

Literally my favorite is the one or two I have with me at the time.

I whole heartedly agree. I was surprised to see how big a fav both 45 acp and 45 lc are, I wonder if those are favorite calibers or if its just that favorite guns are chambered in those calibers

Like one of the early posters, I did not vote. Favorite caliber? For years it has been the .41 mag, but it is not the caliber I shoot the most, I just like the performance of that cartridge. I have shot a lot of .40 through my Glock as that was my issue weapon with our version of SWAT. I have 9mm conversion barrels for the Glocks and they are tack drivers in 9mm as well. I enjoy shooting.380 as its a challenge to shoot the little guns accurately and quickly. I like the challenge. For shooting semi automatics, I prefer my 1911 in .45 because it packs a wallop and the thumb size brass is easy to find on the ground. When it comes to wheel guns, rapid fire close quarters drills are still fun with a K frame and you don't have to chase brass. For slow fire with big wallop I like my Vaquero in either 38-40 or 45 Colt. If I could get a Vaquero in .41 Mag I would own one in a heartbeat. I should just break down and get a BlackHawk with a 6 1/2" barrel. On second thought, I'm going back to vote for .41 mag. Frank

Wow, difficult to pick just one but I'll say 9mm only because it's cheap & fun. 38 Special is a real close second choice! The bigger handguns cartridges are cool and I have owned/shot more than my fair share; but for just plain ol fun I always come back to something around .355" - .357" ! There are some really cool guns chambered for the 9mm Luger and the economy of that little case is hard to beat. In the 38 Special catagory, I can reload the cases until they split and that means a little brass goes a long way. I generallly lose the 9mm casings long before I wear them out. The .45 ACP results don't surprise me, that cartridge has a lot going for it. I miss my 45 Colt Blackhawk, got rid of it before my reloading days and wish I'd held onto it now.

I voted this poll quite a while ago but never commented. I've forgotten how I voted but suspect that it was .45 ACP since I have more handguns in this cartridge than the others, but since I like most big bore revolvers I would have to say that .44(both Spec. and Mag.), .45 Colt(.454 Casull is a .45 Colt Mag) and .475 L. are favorites also.

I am surprised that .40 is not more popular here. Most of the brass I find at the range is .40S&W. I hardly ever shoot the one I have.

There is no way I could leave out the .357 bores since I load a lot of these and have a .357 carry gun. It is an old police trade in that I had modified to a DAO by bobbing the hammer and an action job. It is a round butt with Pachmayr grip and 3" bbl.

The comment that it is like "choosing one of your children" is right on target.
