what do I have here?

A friend of mine gave me a half bucket of wheel weights and also about ten bars.
The bars are about 12" long 1/4" thick and perhaps 1/2" wide. Stamped on the bars is a name and also 1/2&1/2. Does this mean that they are half tin and half lead?
I have been adding about 2"s of a bar to ten pounds of my range pick up.
It cast fine and seems to harden it up a little.

Could be several things .. I always stamp what it is on the bars as in 50/50 Pb &WW or whatever ..

My 50/50 is usually WW and mono or lino , could be 50/50 of pure and WW or ???

Who knows ?? Got a way of testing the BHN ?? That wud get you in the ballpark of whatever it may be ..

If I were to guess, I would say you are right: It is probably a 50-50 solder stick such as that used in auto body repair decades ago.

Sounds like you have lucked up on some half and half solder which is half tin. Use it sparingly like an all day sucker as you don't need much.

My old shooting partner was a plumber and for every job, they gave them a bunch of 50/50 bars. When he started casting he mixed half of that and half WWs.

Talk about some pretty, shiny bullets.

Fortunately, we caught him before he went whole hog wild and educated him. Somewhere in the 8 buckets of ingots I got when he passed is the ingots he poured when he drainned the pot. Got to catch them and use them wisely.

OK I ain't going out in the snow to look but the stamped name looks like a manufacturer.
My nail tester say's it is at least as hard as a wheel weight. I be thinkin it is lead tin.
It came from a scrap yard.

That's 50/50 solder used for soldering tin or copper roof panels.

I've used 50/50 on several gun repairs (sights) and it works great! I have a bar of it.
