Guess it's time to get a lead thermometer. Just wanted to ask for recommendations, since picking the most expensive doesn't always mean getting the best.

Thanks,

Randy

You may try an industrial instrument suppy house. That's where I got mine and it was around $15.00. That was a few years ago, tho, and the price has undoubtedly gone up a bit!

I have an RCBS. My question is, how accurate are these things? Are they rated by degrees of accuracy or percentages??

I've only owned one and it's a Lyman, seems to work great though. Don't know how I got by without one.

I've got 2 thermometers. The first I got from Bill Ferguson(The Antimony Man) several years ago. The second I got from GAR when they were selling off inventory prior to going out of business. They are identical from the same manufacturer. I believe the brand is Tru-Tel. Not sure and I'm not going out to the shop to check. It's cold here in Tennessee(By my standards anyway).

Based on previous threads, I bought a thermometer from surpluscenter.com. Thermometer has worked reliably for two years so far. About half the price from anywhere else.

Website is down until December 14.

The Lyman one has worked well for me. It's kind of handy, in that it's marked with ranges of melting points for various alloys like WW & Lino in addition to being graduated in degrees F. Cabellas usually has them on the shelf.

I have used my RCBS without problems, seems accurate as far as I can tell.

Some of em might be a few degrees out-o-whack but you get used to where the reading needs to be for things to work for ya. Kinda like an old 30-30, you gotta learn where to hold the sights.

Tel-Tru for $19.00

http://www.teltru.com/p-272-big-green-egg-grill-dome-kamado-replacement-thermometer-lt225r-2001000-degrees-f.aspx

They also sell a "Laboratory Grade" thermometer that appears identical, but is $33.00 and has the following specs (if someone can them interpret that would be great):

Accuracy: ±1% full span per ASME B40.3 Grade A.
Over Temperature Limits: Up to 250°F 100%; 250°F to 550°F, 50%; 550°F to 1000°F, continuous use up to 800°F, intermittent use over 800°F.

I wonder if they are identical and it's either just marketing, or that the ones sold for use in the "Big Green Egg" Barbecue failed QA testing. I bet it's both, as they can't rely solely on failed units (and very few should fail) to supply the BBQ market.

I'm going to buy one of each and run them side-by-side in an unscientific test.

Tel Tru $19: Ordered one on Dec 4th, got a reply thanking me for the order that day. Since then had heard nothing from them. Tried to email customer service info@trutel, kicked back the email as undeliverable. Replied to the marketing dept that sent me the email, heard nothing back. Got an email late today (Dec 14th) from UPS that they had received the item for shipment with scheduled delivery Dec 21st. Ten days to ship, and only after I had to complain. Not a word of reply from Tru Tel. Seventeen days to get a cheap thermometer, plus $7.00 shipping for the privelidge of it taking 17 days. Should have bought a Lyman.

I got a RCBS, I don't know how accurate it is for temp. but it seems consistant and I think that is more important (when I find a good temp. I want to find it again).

I don't know who makes the Lyman or RCBS thermometers. I'm sure they buy them from someone else with their name stamped on them. The Tel-Tru mentioned above is a good brand and may be who builds the thermometers for Lyman and RCBS.
I've used hundreds of the Tel-Tru thermometers in the offshore oilfield environment. They last most of the time for years without problem in 24/7 service. Some of the better Tru-Tel thermometers can be calibrated if need be.
