I have the smallest groups with the expensif Hornady gaschecks.
Maby I do something wrong. I have tryed beercans ,copper and brass from cases.

I have with a variety of calibers...

I use aluminum flashing that is .014" thick and the performance is comparable to using Hornady gas checks. In the .30 Caliber I shoot a .30-06, a caliber that is intrinsically quite accurate. If you are not getting the accuracy that you feel you should, you will have to tailor your loads---differerent sizing, lube, powder and/or powder charge. I never expected that I woudl get exactly the same performance with home made aluminum gas checks vs copper commercially produced one.

In my .243 Win and my .357 & .44 magnums I have found the home made gas checks are as accurate as commercially made ones.

I would bet that if you used the same copper stock that Hornady uses, that your home made gas checks would perform just as well as theirs.

thickness is your friend, there is a thread somewhere here that discusses the fact that hornady uses different thicknesses of copper for their different sizes of gas checks cut off points if you will, like from 22-270, 7mm to 311, and 32 through 375 etc.
i would measure my shank and the final diameter of what i wanted to end up with and target that thickness of materials. or slightly larger.

I use aluminum cat food cans for my 375 checks. It is .008" thick.

I have found that one needs to use aluminum @ .011~.014" thickness for best results with my Freechex II tools.

I use .014" brass commercial shim stock. Costs me about $8 per thousand .30/.31/8mm GCs. It is uniform and easy to work with in my GC tool. Below is a comparison od my 8mm GC compared to Hornady's. The load was not worked up but is a pretty good standard load for 180 - 210 gr 8mm cast bullets. Cases were Turks with the berdan milsurp primers. My .30 and .31 cal GCs do as well in a myrid of cartridges. I also have found the need for .014 - .016" thick material for my home GCs to stay on the shanks of most of my cast bullets of .30/.31/8mm.

A little further down we have an entire Gas Check sub forum. Lots of answers there.
