Here's my first attempt with the Model 70 30-06 my girlfriend bought for me for my birthday a couple years ago. I've been shooting my #1 45/70 and handguns mostly, some 30/30 but I finally got around to the ole 06. I took the load from the Lymans 48th edition manual. It was listed at potentially most accurate with mold #311672 at 160gr. I used a Lee boolit that's close to that design the C309-160-R. At 50yds I used the center of the crosshair on a Simmons 8 point duplex retical. The first shot was at the bottom of the plate. I then used the thicker part of the retical as a post and held on the center. I've got a little tweaking to do but I'm happy so far with the results. I used wheelweights and water dropped straight from the mold. According to the Lee tester it's a 22bhn. I only shot 5 rounds so any leading wasn't noticed.

Pardon the "TARGET". It's a little dirty, it was holding my pizza I had for lunch.

No bad for a first load. 18 gr of Unique is fairly stout, keep dropping down the load in .5 gr steps till you find your barrel's sweet spot. I have done very well in the 14-15 gr range with boolits of similar weight.

Ditto what RU Shooter has said.....I'd definitely drop that charge by several grains.
