I'm trying to decide what I'm getting for Christmas this year. I'm considering a 170gr boolit for something bigger to shoot in a .357 mag. It will be used in a Taurus 66 (old model) 6". Has anyone used this mold before? Will it fit a standard length magnum cylinder seated to the crimp groove? Or is this one that is designed for a rifle / 357 maximum type application? Any input would be appreciated.

Tanks in advance

Not having a Taurus handy to check, I can say it's right at the end of the cylinder on a S&W K-frame, L-frame, and Ruger Security Six. It's a long nosed piece for sure.

You'll have to measure your cylinder length. The 429 is a long boolit, but many folks seat to the front shoulder and it works.

Nora, The bullet, seated to the crimp groove will be a bit too long. I don't like seating/crmping on the front driving band, so I made up a batch of .357 Cal brass trimmed by just enough to allow me to seat/crimp the bullet in the crimping groove.

There is clearance in the Security Six that I am familiar with at the .357 mag length. It shoots very well loaded as a magnum or at .38 Special pressures and velocities.

The brass I use must either be long, or the cylinder short. Any jump from the crimp will tie up the single specimen of Security Six I tried it in.

One of these days....
I'm getting an original 358429 mold and an old 3-screw Blackhawk, 4 5/8".
I'll be set for life!

Can't beat a 358429 in a .38 or .357.

When Elmer Keith developed it in the '30's there were not many 357 rifles. It shot well in the 38 on a 44 frame and still does.

What a lot of people forget is that Elmer Keith designed the 358429 before the .357 Magnum came out. He originally used it in .38 Specials and .38-44s. If Smith & Wesson had used a longer cylinder that filled the window in frame on the first .357's there wouldn't be as much confusion.

The loaded round seated in the crimp grove length is 1.610" (less the height of the case rim)--so it would appear it will fit nicely for you.

I seat mine short and crimp on the front drive band for my 357 N-Frame....its a great bullet and both myself and the N-Frame like it alot with a heavy charge of H110.

I also use it in 38 spl with Unique, crimp where it is suppose to go.

Would be a great bullet hollow pointed.

Could you trim your brass a little? You may have to keep it separate if you have more than one .357.

I'm sure you could. The Security Six is actually my brothers gun, the boolits were cast by me. I just remember him commenting on how close they were to the cylinder face. His gun has bigger problems than boolit fitment anyways... ;)

358429 + a 38/44 S&W Outdoorsman = perfection ! :) :)

The NOE 358429's are a snug fit in the throats of my dad's GP100, but have plenty of wiggle room.
