I was looking at http://www.backyardmetalcasting.com/oilburners03.html and showed pictures of a waste oil burner. I currently have several drums of waste oil that I used to use for concrete mold release a couple of years ago. I had a thought of putting into use the waste motor oil and use it instead of propane. Seems like the supply for used motor oil could be virtually inexhaustable because local service stations would pay a HAZMAT company to haul it away.

Can anyone our there in boolit land offer some suggestions - blueprnts, source of parts, etc.

Do not know if this is the type of stuff you are looking for but here is a link to an article I remember reading a while back. This article is from 1979 and they say modern oil does not work as well but it may be a starting point for a project.

This book (http://www.lindsaybks.com/bks5/chalfur/index.html) has alot of details about building waste oil burners, mostly in relation to aluminum casting furnaces. It has plenty of information on building them, but you're going to have to figure out your own design.

Sounds good, but no pics came up. I got a pretty good imagination, but not that good.

Sounds like a good project for the future. I will be retiring in a year or so and this would save me some serious bucks.

All of the oil burners I have seen produce vloumes of black smoke which does not endear the owners to their owners, a factor to consider. The modles that burn hottest spray the oil through a jet under pressure, which requires the oil to be filtered to prevent clogging. A little diesel (10%) helps.

Look at the top of the page and there is a link "Image Galary" to pics of the project.

Thanks,

Keep looking at the home metal working groups.Lot of guys out there doing castings for scale steam and IC engines. A fuel oil gun off a home furnace or boiler will work with used oil. They will go up to cast iron melt range 2200 f with some fiddling. Need to filter it real good though. Here is one link I had handy

I forgot to add, I wonder if we could cast bronze/brass handgrips for our Ruger SAs to replace the Al ones? That would be cool, and a lot cheaper than buying them!

I think you can also use waste cooking oil, and there has been discussion about the use of cooking oil to fuel diesel engines, which may also include waste oil burners. I don’t remember if it was on this site or the old one.

Yes, you can use waste cooking oil, I've seen it done in a friends waste oil furnace. The biggest difference in these and a home furnace is the oil (cooking or motor) is run thru a preheater to reduce the viscosity before it reaches the pump. The oil is also pumped to the preheater as it is generally too thick to flow well.

From a little experience I have found that a furnace designed to burn fuel oil needs the waste oil peheated alot or thinned with fuel oil. My neighbor gave up and filled his 275 galon tank 50/50 with used oil and fuel oil. He still saves a bundle on heating his shop. On a fuel oil furnace we pulled from a house I had it burning straight used oil but it would not ingnite it. The oil also has so much crud in it the firebox and igniters got covered with a hard fouling pretty fast. If you have ever had an engine that burned some oil you have seen this fouling on the spark plugs. One design I have seen and on commercial oil burners uses a low pressure pump and a larger jet to inject the oil. It had a plate that was very hot to help vaporise and ignite the oil. Very old fuel oil furnaces were low pressure. If you can find an old cast iron coal furnace with a fuel oil conversion it is more than likely a low pressure. I have most of the MOTHER EARTH NEWS mags from the first ten years before the yuppies took it over. Mebbe I can find some articles on it. Jay

................Here's a few.

This one is a site you buy the unit from as a kit and they have a few. They even have a video of one in operation.
