I had the good fortune this weekend to get a mule deer with a 7.5 mm Swiss. The boolit was a 168 grain paper patch gas check cast boolit shot at 2,600 fps. The boolit hit the left side of the chest punched through the lungs and came to rest on the opposite side between the ribs and hide. The boolit expanded to over twice the original 30 caliber and retained 120 grains of weight. The lungs were utterly devasted and the deer took only one step then fell like a ton of bricks. I do not know what more can be expected from a hunting bullet.

Awesome. 2600 fps. Thank you for sharing.

1874 Sharps, do you have a picture of the bullet as cast or a link to a picture I could see. Very interested in seeing what a paper patch bullet looks like. Thanks you.

Sweet ;-)

What was the alloy?

Gentlemen,

The exact alloy and hardness is unknown to me, but a fingernail can barely mark the boolit. A nice feature of paper patching is that the cast boolit does not contact the bore, so extreme hardness for catching and holding the rifling is not needed. The boolit had to be fairly hard at 2,600 fps so that it did not disintegrate upon impact and penetration of the chest cavity. Because a cast boolit is homogeneous there is no copper jacket that can separate. Also, the only weight loss is that of the outer ring of the mushroom, so weight retention is good.

The photos show the Lee mold I had made up, the boolit as cast, the boolit with gas check applied and the boolit with paper jacket and Lyman black lube applied.

Well done sharps thanks for the info. More food for thought for me.

Did you have the mold cut for exact bore diameter? Is the gas check needed for paper patching?
