Finally loaded up some of these for my Marlin 336. I loaded them with 9gr. Unique with a CCI LR primer, seated to 2.500. They fed and functioned my Marlin perfectly. Shot really low though. Even had the sight elevator all the way to the end notch. I am gonna try 10gr. next and see if it will bring it in tighter to POA. I could never get the Lee 160gr. GC to feed in my Marlin so this is good for me. I have a Williams peep sight for the receiver that may get bolted on this sucker! That will give me more to play with for elevation I think. I traded some WW ingots to 30-30guy for this mold.

Microgroove 336?

That bullet is a fairly popular one for a 30-30. You should be able to make it shoot closer to the point of aim with hotter loads. I had fair luck with powders like 4759, or RE7.

Yes MicroGroove. Clean as a whistle after too. This mold is the smaller Meplat one. Junior did a write up on the 309-180 and his meplat was quite wide. This one is narrow. Still flat though so it's good for the 30-30.

Please allow my short Hi Jack. Speaking of Junior.

That is the bullet I use in my 30/30. I use 28.5 grains of 760, and have gone higher, but it still doesn't shoot anywhere near POI that factory 170 grain does. My rifle is an XLR.:D

I am gonna drift out the front bead sight and drift in a straight post and also screw the Williams on the back and see what we got. I would like to put the wife on it and see how she does.

I used this bullet to win the Idaho State Cowboy Rifle Silhouette Championship in 2005. The rifle was a pre 64 Win 94 with a redfield reciever sight and a 20 inch barrel. The load was 34 grains of IMR 4831 and the RCBS 30-180 fp. The bullet weighed in at 190 gr with my alloy and a gas check. It left the muzzle at just under 1800fps. This load would put 5 bullets in 3 inches at 200 meters. It also made me punch drunk to shoot it in a 60 round match.

9gr. of Unique and the recoil is akin to a .223 Ar15.

You know, we talk about microgroove in generic terms, but there are two distinct kinds, and that perhaps has led to some of the confusion about it. The early microgroove was 16 grooves, and in some guns very shallow, like .0005 or 1/2 of a thousands. Later, Marlin changed it to 12 grooves that are really almost as deep as normal rifling though I have measured some that were only .0015 deep on a side when they first changed over.

Back to the subject, I have the RCBS 30-180 mold, and have used the boolits in several 20-20's with very good results. It can be a little tight chambering in some Marlins, but I've always gotten good accuracy with Unique, 2400, and the various full power powders.

Evan, try 28.0gr H4895, or some of the loads at the bottom of Taylor's article. http://www.leverguns.com/articles/taylor/model94_3030.htm

Handloader 223 had some 180gr loads. The bullet was a SAECO 62307FPGC, but I think you could use them.

IMR SR-4759
18.5gr 1,806fps,

Ramshot TAC
26.0gr 1,856fps,

IMR 4350
34.0gr 1,959fps,

IMR-3031
27.0gr 1,898fps,

Winchester W-748
27.0gr 1,933fps,

Winchester W-748
23.0gr 1,236fps,

I also like the Blue Dot 13.0gr, and the standard Unique 10.0gr loads.

Thanks Jim I have almost all the powders you listed! I have a pile of IMR 4350. A full pound of 3031 as well. A bit of 748 left as well.

I e-mailed him. He is healthy which was my concern but isn't coming back due to "un-American Sentiments" in off topic. Our loss as well. Gianni.

I did drift out the rear sight and put a Marble's dovetail blank in. Also screwed down the Williams WGRS. Left the front sight as is. Gonna load up some more ammo and see how it all does.
