christmas came early for me and Santa must have subcontracted his intelligence service to the CIA this year 'cause I got 2 new rifles and a new bow.

I've been posting and asking about my ML/ percussion schuetzen rifle in the BP forum; now I'm asking abut loads for my new litttle ruger 44M lever carbine. I KNOW, or I've been told plenty of times elsewhere, that this is is short range minute-of-deer. brush gun and to be happy with 4 or 5 inch groups at 100 yards. It's got a crappy trigger pull (which should be fixable) and the stock is one only Ruger's cost accountant could love. however I've gotten 3 and 4 inch groups with several kinds of factory 240 gr JHPs.

Problem is my cast handloads are all over the place and hitting a good foot low. I suspect that I need to do some case trimming and sorting and work on crrimp/neck tension. I have done a whole bunch of 44m shooting out of my custom 4" Redhawk but 44m in rifles is new to me.

I'm fish'n for any advice or suggestions for good ACCURATE bullets/loads out of rifle/carbine length barrels. Since a lot of states have opened up previously-shotgun-only areas to pistol calibre rifles I'd think there'd be a real onflux of 44M rifle loads.

Some .44 carbines do shoot pretty well indeed, though they are not benchrest guns. I have used the Lyman 429244 GC boolit with 23.0 grains of H-110 as my go to hunting load for a couple, or three years now, and like it. I got a couple of groups around 2 1/2" or less at 100 yards when sighting it in with the receiver sights this year. I'm a little shaky because of some medical stuff, and my 62 year old eyes don't help, but my little Win 94 Trails End carbine will always shoot as well as I can. Mine also likes modest loads of Unique behind any 240 gr cast boolit, and has shot very well with the Speer Gold Dot 210gr, and the Lyman 429215 cast boolit.

A problem the ruger 96 suffers is a rather large throat and a short magazine. Best load in mine so far is the Ranch Dog 265 gr Boolit @.432 and a stiff charge or AA#9s
Happy Shootin

I'll go Dittos with NHlever on the 429244 with 23 of H110. Works good for me in the revolvers and the rifles. Helice

23 gr. of H110 with 240 gr. SWC has worked very well in my 96.

If you've been shooting jacketed bullets, you may want to thoroughly clean your bore of all residue and then slug the bore.

My Rossi Model 92 Puma likes a 240 grain boolit - SWC or RN - with 17.0 grains of 2400.
