I'm thinking of getting a 35 x 30/40 barrel for shooting cast. Does anybody have any experience with this round or have any links with data?

Someone had some posts about a 35 - 30/30, which should have some similar issues/concerns/advantages as a 35-30/40, but you should get a little more velocity. You might do a search for it. It sounded pretty interesting & from what I remember, the guy was pretty happy with it.

Wouldn't that be pretty similar in case capacity to the .358 Winchester?

I could see doing it if you're going to rebore an existing 30/40 Krag, but otherwise, why not just go with a .358 Win or a .35 Whelen?

TC Contender

Looking for the ultimate 35 cal in a 14" barrel.
The 35 Rem is pretty good. The Krag would have a longer neck and a little more powder.

The 35 Krag has about the same case capacity as the .358 Win or .356 Win. both which are to much for the Contender unless they are downloaded.. At least with the older T/C frames that I have.. Maybe the new G2 frames handle higher pressures I don't know..

I would think a 35's made by Bullberry, SSK, or Bellm would be better as they are designed for the Contender..
Take a look at the .358 Bellm for example

I would also check out this sight and ask about delivery times and quality of work before committing any $ to one of these barrel makers .. It used to be they were really back logged..

Back in the 80's when I lived in the States I was a Contender nut.. Up here handguns are restricted and we can't hunt with them so I left them with a friend down there. I did bring up a carbine and would like to get either a .375 win. or a Rimmed .35 Remington which is just a .35 Rem using Krag brass run thru a .35 Rem die and trimmed back.. The barrel also has to be cut for the Krag rim..
Contenders sure are a fun little firearm to plink and hunt with..
If you do get your "ultimate .35" I'd like to hear about it..

I know there was an article on the .35 Krag in Handloader, but I don't think there was any cast bullet data. I'll look anyway. There is a semi-wildcat based on a .35 Remington Contender barrel with a rim recess cut into the breech face. This was done to correct misfires that were driving the owner nuts. I can't remember what case was used right off hand. I'll check that one, too.

The 35-30/40 is a dead ringer for the old .35 Winchester. This round was introduced in the 1895 Winchester Lever. Cartridges of the world should have loading data as does some of the old Lyman loose leaf type reloading manuals.
I shoot a 9x57 Mauser using the lyman GC 358009 mould at 292gr. It is a big blunt nosed bullet with lots of accuracy potential and good killing power. You should be able to attain 1800+ fps with great accuracy.
A 1 in 14 twist appears to be ideal with this bullet. Faster twists seem to over spin the bullet and skid a little on the rifling with top loads.
This would be a great cartridge in a single shot or one of the Browning/Winchester 1895 replicas.

The ultimate .35 cal cartridge in a 14" Contender barrel is the .357 Max [smilie=1:

I have a 15 inch .35 Rem Rimmed barrel made by Mike Bellm. It will shoot a little faster than the Max but not by much. The way I see it the main thing you gain with the bigger cases is the ability to use heavier bullets. Maybe that's what you are after.
