I got some great pure lead in pipe form from a friend with a scrapyard (for round balls). Problem is, it's full of hard water scale (probably calcium & magnesium compounds, among other stuff). It was cut into short chunks with a "nibbler" which crimped the stuff inside. That eliminated using acid to remove it. I've tried my old regulars, beeswax & powdered rosin with some success but still have to work constantly at it & have some rejects. Any help appreciated??

I have melted many pounds of that pipe and the crud will float to the top and is skimmed off. No problem at all.

The calcium scale is Calcium carbonate or sulfate or some other compund, along with a biofilm and a lot of other crud. Since the calcium is not in the metallic state and is not already alloyed with the lead it'll will be removed with the dross just like Greg said.
