Once upon a time I decided that dial-up ISP's actually weren't worth more than five bucks because they were slooooow and they always dropped your internet connection all the time, so well, then maybe I shouldn't actually be paying more than $5 for dial-up service.
This was back when ISPs cost $20+ a month and some yahoo figured out he could completely automate an ISP with net-based sign up and net-based support and actually make money selling a single e-mail equipped unlimited time connection for $4.95 per month (billed to your credit card automatically as a no-fuss kinda thing). This was pretty radical stuff back then.
The company was Acess4less.net and it was tiny and kinda primitive back when it started out.
It worked real good though -- actually worked better than AOL as far as getting on quick and STAYING ON. What amazed me is on the very few times Acess4less did drop off the connection, it stopped and told you that it had just lost the connection and offered you the chance to RECONNECT and save your post that you hadn't quite finished yet. I can't count the number of posts AOL threw off into neverland without even saying boo, that it had dropped me off line and I was typing on a piece of vaporware and didn't even know it. I hated AOL for that stuff ...... arrogant old AOL.
Anyhow, I got better service for $4.95 from Access4less.net than AOL gave me for $23 and I also found out about Freedomlist.com which is a group of guys who track and evaluate free ISPs and cheap ISPs and who discuss them just like we do bullets and shooting.
Access4less was a real winner and LOTS of people found out about it through word of mouth. So many that it began to chew up on Earthlink's low cost offerings something fierce. Access4less got so good Earthlink couldn't compete with them, so they went and bought them out (to the cries of "foul play !!!" from millions of happy Access4less customers). Earthlink bough it all, the ISP and the Hawknet V92 modem network that stood behind Access4less and a lot of other small ISP vendors across the nation.
Anyhow, Earthlink actually thought we would all now go cough up $10+ a month to keep our old email names and have "the same excellent Access4less service level" (which we would not be getting, we would be getting bloated & slow Earthlink services instead). Double the cost, cut the service value in half -- it is the Earthlink way.
The ISP gurus at Freedomlist.com have spoken -- everybody flee the evil Earthlink and go to the lean mean little guy who is almost as good as Access4less was.
His name is All2easy.net and he will cost you $4.95 a month with NO startup fee. They claim 200 hours for $4.95 but if you log off when you are not using the service and do not cause waste there actually isn't an enforced maximum number of hours. Waste (leaving it on unattended) gets enforced, not real usage hours.
If you want to read reviews and scan discussion on these little guy ISPs go to Freedomlist.com and check them all out. All2easy has access to all the little guy networks all over the nation, so you will be able to get a toll-free local access number from just about anywhere. All but a very few are modern V92 modems (compression supporting).
This post was made from All2easy.net and my new email addy is "nancy7695@all2easy.net" I changed it on the admin page already so it should show up if you click on my Paladin horse.
(see, I do love my wife -- it is her old email address. Mine was already taken, so I got her hers instead)
If you went with Access4less you are soon going to get a notification that it ends the 20th of next month and Earthlink takes over. Bail now, because when Earthlink takes over your e-name they are notorious for not letting you go and continuing billing you for months while you struggle to get free of them. Bail now while you are still working with the original Access4less people (who will treat you well).
