Anybody ever use lead from the trap of a club that only shoots .22LR? Was wondering what it is and how it works, what might have to be added etc. I belong to such a club and we haul several buckets full of lead out of the trap each year. I'd like to grab them and stock pile this stuff if its good lead. Thanks!

.22 slugs are nearly pure lead, in my opinion. Lead is lead is my motto; never turn down free (or even reasonable) lead!

Yes I use lots of it. It seems to not have antimony as the color is same as lead/tin alloys very shiney. I am shure it has tin as it will test about the same hardness as 25/1. Casts vary easily.

Would the copper "wash" on some rimfire ammo hurt the alloy?

Curious,

I melt down all of my Colibri slugs. I don't think the copper wash on the washed ones matters a whit. It won't alloy in at low-temp smelting so you can slag it off.

Thanks folks, now I know. Shame I wasn't looking into bullet casting a year or so ago, we pulled ten 5 gallon buckets of lead out of the trap and argued over who was going to get rid of them. I think there are still two there, I'll grab them if they are and stick them in the garage.

At the club I RO for, we go through 20-25 bricks of .22 rimfire a month. The rest of the lead is from FMJ rounds. I take the lead straight from the trap and shoot it up to 1200 fps without problems. Lee alox or homemade peanut oil lube.
