The bullets for the 1886 were esigned as an express load using a 300 grain flat nose bullet. Lyman makes a mould that looks like the ideal mould but I wanted to know if any of you had experience with this bullet. It is a 300 grain flat nose with a gass check. It has wide driving bands and grease groves. If you have experience with this bullet what lub ar you using. Also. what powder an howm much.

I shot the 330 Gould Express bullet in my 1886 with great sucess. I was laoding Fg Black in cases with a 5/64th drilled flash hole and using a waxed felt wad and a dry card wad. The bullet was cast 1-40 and did excellent work on lighter game such as coyote and deer. My best group at 200 yards ( My Max hunting range on the tang sight) was right at 6" and this from an 1886 carbine.

There is an article in the February 05 issue of Handloader, by Venturino, which discusses loads for both the 86 Winchester and the Sharps, using, for the Winchester, RCBS 45-300FN, RCBS 45-400FN and Lyman 45-300 FN.

Lyman's 457191 is a copy of the original .45-90 300 gr. bullet.

If you want to go faster than 1,500 f.p.s. you can use a .06" thick poly wad under the base of the bullet for good results.

I went to the range today with some 45-70 brass loaded with 12.6 grains of Trail Boss and the Lyman 405 grain Fn . I was very disappointed the bullets went all over the place at 25 yards. I could have do better with my 45 ACP.
I switched to some Lee bullets 300 grain on top of 30 grains of 5744 lubed with liquid Alox and got a decent grouping. Mike Venturino recommends the rcbs 300 grain bullet on top of 33 grains of 5744. I just ordered the mould tonight.
