Well today was range day before the snow showed up. I was shooting my 22 Hornet with 4.5 Unigue, 44 gr loads across my Chrono and was getting just over 100 fps spread in my 5 shot groups(1854-1966fps). Would dacron over the powder tightn that up? The groups are nothing to write home about either, 1 1/2 ". suggestion? (no I am not going to take up golf) Thanks Martin :groner:

Use slower powder.
Here is a very basic rule of thumb I like to use when selecting a powder for boolits.
Look for powder burn rate that give optimum performance with jacketed bullets in the next larger case of the same caliber.
Example for a good powder for boolits in the hornet case look at powders or burn rates that are optimum with jacketed bullets in the 222. For boolits in the 222 look at the 22/250.
OK lets go up in caliber to 30 cal. For boolits in the 30/30 look at the 308. For boolits in the 308 look at the 30/06. For the 30/06 look at the 300 magnums. Beginning to get the picture. What you end up with is a powder that is too slow for the case your using it in for optimum performance, read top velocity for jacketed bullets but perfect for a nice gentle push to start a boolit on its way. And one more thing is that the very small rifle cases like the hornet respond well also to the gentler spark of a SP primer. I have had my greatest success with the Federal # 100.

if you use dacron you'll need to back the load down some and start over.
a filler will position the powder to the primer causing more consistent ignition.
you could also try another brand of primer or a pistol primer.
sometimes just going to a slower powder would help also as it should fill the case more.
i use aa- 2230 in my 25-20,it's slower than w-296 and aa-1680 even.
but sure don't hurt the plain base any and the vel's are right up there with j-words.

looks like dan hit the enter button a bit faster then i did but it shows great minds think alike.

I was using Sp primers, I learned that trick with LiLgun and jackets. The powders I have and have Hornet load data for are,7625,blue dot, H110, 2015. I have 3031,2460, and 2520 but loads for the Hornet. FYI thanks martin

OK that 2015 should be about right. Scott powders made a number called Scott 4197 which was very near the same burn rate as IMR and Hodgdons 4198. AA took over the Scott line and the 4197 became 2015. The three powders are optimum for top velocity with jacketed bullets in the 222, BINGO!!!
