It's been a year since I got my Savage 111 in 338 Win Mag, and I have been trying to find the time, tools, and materials to shoot it with cast boolits ever since. I had to special order the sizing die from Lee, which took months to arrive. I had to order the gas checks directly from Hornady, and that took months also. The mold, a Lee 200 gr RNGC, was actually in stock. I tried shooting it with the boolits as cast (no checks), and then with just checks, still without sizing. My results were dismal, resulting in patterns rather than groups.
Yesterday I tried the sized, checked bullet with LLA and 35 grs of SR 4759. The first 3 shots were all in one ragged hole ! That's the kind of groups I get with this rifle shooting jacketed. It was at only 25 yards, since I have just moved to rural acreage where I can shoot, but don't have a longer range set up yet. At 100 yards, that group would still have only been one inch, so I am quite pleased with the way this project has turned out so far. Now for some longer ranges...

39 grains of 3031 and the Lee 220 RNGC boolit is my most accurate cast gun loading.
Same load with the old Hornady 200 FN meant for the 33 Winchester is just as good and same point of aim.

I wanted to hunt with this gun/boolit combo and the Round Nose was out and the 200 grain RCBS has yet to come close to the same level of accuracy. Maybe a file and a scale would give me a flat point shooter that I could hunt with out of the Lee.

I have lots of 4759 and little 3031 left, so I will look into your load.

It's a great day when things finally come together.

My favorite with this boolit is 40 gr. IMR 4198 and a tuft of Kapok for 2300 fps.

In case you get some reversals in your progress, I recommend this book from Beartooth Bullets:

And congrats on your success thus far!
