I sent Hogdon an e-mail and they have never answered me ( good PR)
I am trying to find info on the differences between IMR and A powders
I have IMR 4895 and H4198 and am wondering as to the diference between them and H4895 and IMR 4198?
Does anyone know of a chart that gives the diferences?

They are different powders, with similar uses and burn rates. Think of them as fraternal twins with similar names but different personalities.

I don't know what cartridge you are loading for but (providing it's not a wildcat) if you go to the Hodgdon data site and enter the cartridge and ask for data it will show loads for both of these powders on the same page and you can compare them. RD

I am trying to develop loads for an old (really old) 1888 commission rifle.
It is 8x57J instead of the modern 8x57JS, It has a .318 groove instead of the modern .323 groove.
Using data for a modern 8x57JS cartridge is only asking for trouble!
I know I can go to the next higher weight boolit and the data will work but don't want to take a chance.
Here on the forum we simply say 4895 powder and expect everyone to understand the diference but I was looking for some actual data for the diferences .
Thanks for the replies.

it might be closer to 320- 321 which would be nice for 32-40,32 win special boolits.
don't always take those older rifle's for what they should be.
my buddy has a 303 brit with a 308 groove ,and i have one with a 312 and one closer to 316.
they won't share loads.
if you are gonna reduce loads i'd go with the hodgdons version.
