Hi all,

Was wondering if someone has a quick answer. What velocity do I get using 4gr. of 700X behind a 405gr. lead slug in my 45-70 Marlin. The bbl is 22". My chrony broke.

Thanks all.
Cheers,
Mad

Well, using a 457122 HP Lyman HP weighing 338 grains with 4.0 grains of 700X with a 1" square of dacron over the powder, I clocked 572 FPS.

My 45-405-FN wighs 414 grains with check so I'd estimate it's clocking a little over 500 FPS.

Probably gives really decent accuracy at 50 yards but won't shoot to point of aim. Would be H-ll on feline pests up close./beagle

The Mad Rusky! I thought you got shipped back to the motherland.:D Haven't seen you around in a long time. Welcome to the forum.

I'm still using your Borsch recipe. Also keep describing to these folks your adventures in using a wood dowel for slugging a bore. [smilie=1: Hope your over that one now.:D

Hey BA.

Nice to see you too. Yeah. The wood dowel adventure is in the past. It was not for slugging, but for plugging the barrel while browning my .357 Marlin. Big diff :-D
Been too busy lately. Trying to come up with good cast loads for my new toy - Ar-15 in 450 Bushmaster that I built recently.

See ya, mate.

Thanks a lot, beagle.

I used it today to get a deer at my friends place. Needed a super quiet load because of the neighbors. So it was. Off the roof of the house. Almost fifty yards. Bang...boom....done. A pass through the scull between the eyes. She must have heard the bang, but that was the last thing for her. Dropped dead on the spot. I tested the load on a hardwood log about 2 months ago and it penetrated the wood 3+ inches on everage out of 3 shots at 25 yards. I needed to know the velocity though to calculate the drop for different distances. The load was shooting about two inches high at 25 yards. I am happy. Finally I need to go and buy myself a deep freezer.

Cheers,
Mad
