On Oct 18 I said:

I am getting a serious itch for a Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 7 1/2" Hunter revolver to hunt hogs and deer.

Today my check is on it's way for a Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Mag. Bisley Hunter
http://www.snakeriverarms.com/product_detail.php?proid=10136&catid=2

Now I've got a serious itch for a mold, some brass, and dies.

I've had some suggestions on boolits, but am still undecided -- probably want to start with some sort of 310gr that I will eventually hunt with, and then a little later get something in the 200's for plinking/target.

Will 100% WW work, should I water quench, etc...

All I've been using are tumble lube molds so far, so don't have a lubrisizer. Are there any good tumble lube boolits in 310gr (does Alox work for .44 boolits over a mag load), or do I need to move away from TL?

How is pan lubing? I suppose it's really slow, but is it hard to find a good "recipe" to avoid leading?

Any suggestions on how I should proceed?

Thanks,

Randy

I just noticed this: "432-265 GC RF Group Buy."
http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=62501&highlight=ranch+dog

I wonder how this boolit would perform in my Super Blackhawk .44 Mag?

Says this mold is offered in gas check or non gas check... are gas checks necessary for the .44 with or w/o Mag loads?

Thanks,

Randy

Like this. 50 and the can at 100 yards. I aimed higher for the last shot trying to center the can.
The Lee 310 will do this too.
Don't tumble lube, use regular lube like Felix or Lar's lube.

Buy a .430" sizer, as cast is not going to give you great accuracy IMO. Target load use Alliant Unigue. For maximum W296. No gas check is needed if bullet alloy is near BHN15 air cooled, 2% tin added. NRA type alox and bees wax, 50/50 lube works for me. http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n420/joe1944usa/th_Alloy_20090610_1.jpg (http://i338.photobucket.com/albums/n420/joe1944usa/Alloy_20090610_1.jpg)

I have the luxury of being able to shoot everyday and about 75 yards down hill from my home. So this information might explain my answers.

I will order the 432 265 clone mould from NOE (the group buy you mentioned) since I have a 2 and 6 cavity RANCH DOG version of it....and think it is a great design! (I tumble lubed and then dipped in ALOX and sized with gas checks.) I don't need gas checks since I prefer mid range (around 1000 FPS) loads in a large number of VAQUEROS/BISLEY VAQUEROS and MARLIN Cowboy rifles. You might consider getting this mould with a mix of plain base/gas check cavities....I bought the 360 180 WFN with 4 PB and 1 Gas Check. I size to .431 in a STAR using LARS' 50/50 mostly, but have experimented with 2500, BAC and Carnuba from LARS.

If you can't afford a lubri-sizer, I'd have Buckshot make me a push through sizer at .431 and tumble lube/dip lube per Ranch Dogs tutorial. This works with conventional design boolits, as well as tumble lube.

Develop a good load that is comfortable to shoot with an economical powder and boolit. After you reach a comfortable accuracy range for practice, then develop a hunting load with the gas check boolit or something else.

Yeah, we don't need no steenkin' CB accuracy! Here's a pic of my target using a SBH from a rest @ 25 yds., open sights. Also, I had Buckshot open a .430" RCBS sizing die to .431" so that the cast bullets would fit my revolver's cyl. throats. Btw, the plain based Lyman #429421 and RCBS 250-K[eith] CB's are also very accurate from my gun.

yea, you'll get no accuracy with cast boolits. :D

This is a plain base boolit too.

that's 5 shots in the one spot, and the 6th all by it's lonesome.

From .430" to .432" is good. I make mine .432" for rugers.
