What is the twist, Charlie? I had a 1-72 that took 170 gr. 2 ff before it really started to perform.

Killed at both ends!

Ric,

How was that under hammer as to getting some gas out of the nipple near your hand or any other body part?

I never owned or shot one.

The last 62 I built was proofed with 300 grians of FFg and two balls seated tight on the powder. The working loads started at 120 grains of FFG and went up to a max of 200 grains. The 200 grain load would shoot into 3" with iron sights at 100 yards and with a high back hold would drop a ball into and through deer at 200 yards. That was a 1-72 twist and was breeched for heavy loads for long range elk hunting and the stock was an Ennglish design with a wide flat butt. The barrel was 1 1/8 tapered and the whole gun weighed 11 1/2 pounds. You loads will depend on twist, breeching and gun weight. A 1" barrel in a 7 pound gun just isn't going to be shootable with more than 120 or so grains of powder. If your nipple is screwed directly into the barrel and the full surface of the nipple is bearing the brunt or the pressure, you will want smaller loads than if the nipple is into a 2 step hole. Loads over 150 grains will burn out a nipple quickly and loads under 120 will last pretty good. When and if you get to the point that the hammer is cocking back from nipple venting you need to back off even if you haven't got to the sweet spot for the twist.

I was speaking of .62 caliber in general, not an underhammer.

My 62 under hammer has never been used for hunting, just paper and other targets. Does great at candle shoots or knocking down metal. Seems to work good with 60 grains of 2F. I don't think I ever shot it over 100 yards.

Joe, I've got a 50cal underhammer and it shines with 100gr of 3F. It is advisable to wear a long sleve shirt when shooting it but it isn't that bad even without one.
If you are worried about nipple burn out get a platinum lined nipple, not cheap but they last forever. The long range ML will burn out a nipple in a dozen or so rounds and that is what they use in them.

I've seen that caliber work with RBs in a slug rifle with 200 grains of 3f. Given your barrel contour I'd guess you might not want to go there. The one I mention weighed around 30# and still caught an eyebrow on this shot:

Platinum nipples will stay the erosion issue quite a bit with heavy charges.

Dan, that isn't a rifle, it is a crew served artillery piece!!

Looks like a mountain howitzer with a stock.

From that angle, it reminds me of a Lewis Gun without the drum magazine on top.
Even at that weight, that'd still be a pretty cool gun for hunting out of a blind (assuming you weren't far from the truck).
Any idea what velocity was with a .62 ball and 200grn. 3f?
