Roy,
I spoke with SwedeNelson about that. It may be an option in the future to run two different boolits in the same mold, but is not available at this time. It is not the same as the .357 and .45 wadcutters where the depth could be changed to effect weight. Because of the gas check shank and base band these are not adjustable for length.

Jim, I think I will stick with the 1GC 1PB in the RG2. Al makes it so hard to decide with all the options.[smilie=l:

I want to size some down and try them in my 454. That's the reason behind the PB. And there is a good chance I won't need GC's in my 45-70's.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is RG2 and RG4?

I'm looking at the 425 pattern for my Marlin Cowboy. Have to admit that I don't have a lot of experience casting really large bullets. Most of my casting has been for pistol, mostl .357 & .45/.44, along with some 7mm/.30 ca./.22 stuff.

Tried a few LEE aluminums, but didn't like them. Quality, not material. Have stuck with RCBS, LYMAN, SAECO, H&G since then.

What are the casting characteristics of this aluminum alloy when casting large/heavy bullets for the .45/70? i.e., how fast do they heat up? Get too hot? Need cooling? Warping dangers?

Moulds are available in 1-5 cavity...how does the aluminum react to multiple cavities in such a large bullet comparatively speaking?

I like the designs, but am in a quandry as to what exactly will best fit my needs as I'm a complete newbie when it comes to the .45/70.

Gas check or plain base? Gas checks are selling for over $40.00 per 1000 these days. What would be the drawback to going with the plain base?

GC or PB, which would make for a better hunting bullet on moose/caribou/black bear?

How much hassle is it to cast with a mould with one cavity cut for Hollow Point?

Any help in making a decision would be most welcome!:)

Here is the link to the discussion on this before the group buy opened:
http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=64809

Post #7 on that thread will answer your question on the RG hollowpoint designs. RG2 is a two-cavity mold; RG4 is a four-cavity mold.

Concerning your questions about the aluminum characteristics, remember that aluminum is very effective at transferring heat, while the steel molds are more effective at retaining heat.
To relate in casting terms, aluminum allows the mold to more quickly get to the proper operating temperature, and this is further accentuated with the larger bullets since you are transferring heat from more material. In my experience, aluminum molds perform best when run with a slightly hotter pour, and I suspect much of that is due to the fact that aluminum cools off quicker. On the other hand, many cite that this characteristic allows them to cast quicker. I use steel, brass, and aluminum and really have no preference of any one material over the others- I simply take into account that every mold is different and I adjust accordingly. Regardless of mold material, you simply adjust your alloy temperature and regulate your casting rhythm to what that particular mold seems to like.
Warping? Well, I suppose if you put the mold directly on a flame, you could warp it irregardless of the material construction.

You asked about gas check versus plain base. This is a preference based upon your desired load parameters. I have ran these type of bullets well over 2000 fps, so obviously a gas check is preferred. On the other hand, plain-based bullets have served me well up to around 1400 and make very good general-purpose loads. The deciding factors will be how fast you want to drive the bullet and the alloy/lube/fit combination. Keep in mind that you can have both GC and PB in the same mold at no extra charge.

My recommendation: Get at least an RG2 design with one cavity gas check and the other plain base. The mold comes with both hollowpoint and flat pins which are interchangeable. This would allow you to mix and match to create different types of bullets for different purposes.

Some possibilities for you:
1. A plain-based HP for practice, plinking, and the lighter hunting like deer. Driven slow, the bullet would be ideal with a softer alloy for good expansion. Economical due to lower powder charges, no gas check, and slightly smaller amount of lead used for the HP.

2. A plain-based flat point. Same criteria as above, only now you're tired of looking at a hole in your bullet. Seriously, a FP at the lower velocities offers excellent penetration. Easy on your shoulder, too.

3. A gas-checked HP driven at higher velocity. Sounds like something I would use on any of the thin-skinned game, including the caribou you mentioned.

4. A gas-checked flat point driven at higher velocity. Well, I guess this is your Bullwinkle and Smokey medicine.

If budget allows, go ahead and get the RG4. Since you already have the lead melted anyways, might as well make the most of it.:-)

Hope this helps.
Good Luck.

There has been some discussion about the timing of the close dates of the group buys that I have running. I posted the following in one of the other group buys and felt it pertained to all of them, so I am posting it here as well.
Quote:

To Everyone else about close dates. When I open a group buy I set a close date 2 months after opening. This allows everyone interested to take a look at it and decide if it is something that they want to participate in. In the case of the 460 molds I set a date a week and a half after New Years to give people time to figure out how Christmas went.

Shooting, Casting and Reloading is a hobby. It is something that should be accomplished with extra funds that may be available. If you are taking money from your family's needs to do this, then you need to reassess your priorities. We joke about casting as an addiction, but if you need help, please get it.

Close dates are set so as to give some expectation of when to expect movement. Group buys are not placed on the manufacturing schedule until received by NOE with the funds to pay for them. There are expenses that are incurred before manufacturing starts (such as ordering the tooling). Unless the minimum number of molds is met it is not financially feasible to start the process on a mold.

There has been some discussion about getting in on a group buy between the close date and the production date. That policy still has to be determined. Something to keep in mind though. If a group buy doesn't close it doesn't get on the schedule. This group buy is THE perfect example. More than the minimum number of people expressed an interest in it before I opened it. However, things happen and only 6 of the molds ordered have been paid for so far. The order will NOT get placed with NOE until at least 15 have been paid for.

If someone thinks that I am getting free use of the money until the order is placed with NOE they are mistaken. The funds are sitting in my safe, not in my bank account. I normally don't deposit the checks or money orders until about a week before I place the order with NOE.

If someone that has ordered and paid for a mold in a group buy that I have not sent to NOE would like their money back, I will cheerfully return it. I have done so in the past and I am willing to do so again. If you have ordered a mold and not paid but need to cancel, that is fine as well. I would appreciate it if you would make a serious commitment to buy when you order. However, as in phaessler's case, unexpected stuff happens and your responsibility to your family comes first.

Also, PLEASE, name calling about this is unnecessary. We all do this for enjoyment. If someone has a problem with anything that I have done or said, please PM me and we will discuss it. I am always open to listening to good ideas, some I will even use. ;)

Thanks for sharing in a hobby that I have grown to love in this last year.
Pour a hot one!
Jim

p.s. I will be copying and pasting this into my other group buys as well.

None of the 3 are scheduled to go into production until mid june . If I'm not mistaken he will comtinue taking orders and or money until a couple weeks before production starts !

So with that being said you might be able to get a 432-300GC after all :bigsmyl2:

6-Pt -

So you're saying even if the GB is closed if the molds haven't gone into production yet Swede or the honcho will stay take orders -- of course not like three days before it goes into production but say if I wanted to get in like a month before they go he might still take an order?

If so that works out great and like you say I might be able to get in on that 432-300 buy also. Just getting back to work this time of year and things are still tight but will loosen up considerably in a couple of months.

Thanks,

Art

Art going by what I either read or SciFiJim told me he said he was taking orders until close to production time ! And they are slated to start with the 432-300 first sometime in june and then the 460-350 to follw and the last would be the 460-425 ! Send Jim and email and confirm this but what I am telling you I take to be correct !

Art , closed might not be the correct word to use !

There is enough money on hand for the molds to guarantee 15 plus in each buy so they have been scheduled and tooling ordered ! Technically none of the 3 have closed yet ! I would assume they may very well not close until may sometime , but thats just my guess !

I closed the group buy a week ago and then talked to SwedeNelson. Long story short, I will continue to take orders until right before (two weeks) production starts.

Here you go Art I knew I read this somewhere !

And it's my understanding he is doing this with all three of the RD molds and maybe others as well !

Thanks so much man! At first I was kind of disappointed in the production dates but I'd rather see first quality work than fast work anyday AND this puts me in the postion of being able to get in on all three of these GB's!!!!

You guys are a bad influence but I am having the time of my life casting bullets that actually WORK.........................!!

Thanks again 6-pt, I'll keep watching Swedes production schedule, personally I think that having the long lead times and being able to order up to two weeks before they go into production will really boost the total sale of molds on these group buys.

Hello, Little Doc!

Send a PM to SciFiJim to be sure it's still open. On the group buy order page, it is showing it still open, but wouldn't hurt to ask SciFiJim to be sure.

scifiJim: thank you for your prompt pm back to me. I know that I must sound pretty ignorant, but I have never done one of these before. I would like the 311-165-GCRF in an RG4 with only two of the cavities GC and two of the cavities FB (flat based) with an extra set of pins so that I can balance two of the cavities as HP and two as FB. IS possible to Do??? Thank you.

Wiersy111: Also a great thank you, too. thanks for the come back and I appreciate the sig line.

Edited to add: Damn, did I place this in the wrong thread???[smilie=b:
