Been thumbin thru the Handbook & saw where the 357magnum loads could use standard Large pistol or small primers on "new" cases ?????

what yr. was the cut off for large pistol primer cases???

I love collecting the old books ..

Had quiet a few lost in a house fire two and a half years ago ..

Starting back over , but not going to pay a premium to get them either ..

I had never seen any large pistol primed .357 Mag cases till a few years back and I found several. I think I still have them. interesting.

I have a few of those large primer .357 Mag factory loads around here. I think they are Peters headstamp. They are loaded with that dead soft lead bullet that was so famous for leading barrels.

My most treasured books are a 1926(maybe 1927) Lyman/Ideal manual, an 1877 Remington catalog and a 1936 Colt catalog. Best part is that all of them were given to me by friends.

Well fellas the time frame has to be before Ray Thompson designed the 358156 then .

My library is building slowly but surely !!

Nice to see other history observers also!!

I remember reading a Brian Pearce article about that in Handloader. His example he thought dated from the 30's.

IIRC , and nope wasnt there , Lyman added the 358156 in 1952

the hand book is a `58 , the 358156 was a `52 , the 357 was introduced in `35 so we have it down to a 17 yr. window.

So Brian Pearce`s article had to be in late 30`s???

No his article in Handloader was in the early 00's. He had an example cartridge when too many know it all readers called BS. AIRC it was entitled "The.... 357", I forget the adjective used.

I have 50 cases with the large pistol primer pockets. They are all Peters cartridges as stated above. These came from a batch of brass that I got at an estate sale. I didn't notice the large primer pocket until I went to re-prime. I took a double take before I believed what I saw.

Somewhere around here I have a couple of .38 Specials with large primer pockets. I once bought a random bunch of .38 brass and they were in that. Who knows how old??
