Once upon a time. back in the 80's, a guy showed me an ad for 12 gauge shotgun barrels that were a drop-in fit in T/C "Hawken" from an ad out of a Navy Arms brochure. I know, go figure-competitors in BP rifles.

They sold for $100. They never stocked them again and I missed the deal. Any ideas if something like this exists anymore. The barrel is a 15/16.

I see lots of the T/C 56 smoothbores (20 ga or there abouts) advertised and, like you, I thought T/C made at one time a 12 ga. barrel also.

I wouldn't mind having one for my T/C 54 cal. Renegade.

Didn't some of the newer T/C single trigger versions (White Mtn Carbine?) have a 12 ga. option, too?

Maybe you could e-mail Navy Arms and ask them if they remember anything about them.
Numrich Arms might be another place to check.

GM used to make 32" .62 caliber smooth rifle bbls for the Renegade and 1" Hawkens.

Go to muzzle loading forum and ask around, some of the guys have used ones for sale, also TC used to make a .56 smooth bore rifle barrel at one time.

Sme of the guys had the .62 bbls (20 ga) jug choked to various amounts to shoot turkeys or upland game,

I had one of mine rifled by Ed Rayl.

Have fun

Considering that a 12 ga is about 72 cal, a 15/16 barrel would only leave a wall thickness of about .11 which may be a little thin. Would kick like H---l also being that light.

Looks like it would indeed be a little on the thin side for a 12 gauge barrel.

I would still like to pick up maybe a 20 gauge size that would be a drop-in style. Looking at it though, I would be better off just starting out with another gun.

I have a .410 double barrel that they sold in Gander Mountain or Cabela's catalog but it is pretty small and with no choke, not good for much. I have fun with it shooting close-in hand launched claybirds though.

AFAIK, the only 12ga barrels that T/C made for sidehammer muzzleloaders was the New Englander Model, which had a round barrel.

These barrels weren't made by T/C. I went on their site but couldn't find any smoothbore barrels-just stuff for the Encore and Contender mostly.
I'll just wait until I see a good deal on a 20 or 12 gauge double and get it I think.

I'd stick with the .62 (20 ga). You can make your own easy enough. Mark DeHaas sold the smooth bore barrels as do most custom makers.
I just sold a one inch'er here.

Just add breechplug, lugs, sights and underrib/thimbles and you're ready to roll.

My question is, would the hammer line up with the nipple or how would I make sure of that before I plunk down the $?

The TC 56 smoothbore is more like 28ga so should be alright for pot shooting rabbits and chickens.................Harold

The breechplug is what will line up. Track of the Wolf should have TC Copies. Since you already have the tang part, all you need is the plug and be aware, you will have to do some fitting.

newtire,
Bob Hoyt in Pa does rework on barrels. He is a true craftsman. I had a .50 Hawkin barrel that I never used. Took to using a .54 drop-in from Green Mt. Anyway, Bob took that old .50 and made it into a .60 smoothbore. Loves shooting .593 balls and it also functions as a shotgun just fine. Cost of the work was modest. An answer to your quest. Find an old .50 Hawkin barrel and have him do the job. Drop it right in your stock.

Pietro,

Yup, I think I am not being understood and besides it's a moot point now anyway. What I am saying is that there once was an aftermarket barrel available which was not made by Thompson Center to begin with and it was advertised in a sales flyer from perhaps Navy Arms but I missed out on it.

However! One of our members here is hooking me up with a guy who bores out barrels so since I have an old rifled barrel in .50, I can get the rifling bored out to make it into a smooth bore.

So, I'm all good now (as my son would say) and thanks for all the input.

GM made .54 drop in smoothbore barrels for the TCH, I got a rocklock one during the $100.00 sale when they discontinued them.
