View Full Version : Good velocity for GC CB in 30-30?

Today I shot two Lee 312-185R loads at 100 yards. The boolits used gas checks, Liquid Alox lube and were sized to .311.

The rifle was a Winchester 30-30, 26" barrel with a Weaver K 2.5 scope.

One load used 14.0 gr of 2400 and had a velocity of around 1520 fps.

The second load used 20.0 gr of Varget, this gave a velocity of 1300 fps.

Too much and too variable wind gave diagonal stringing, especially with the 1300 fps Varget loads.

There was enough ammo for only one five shot group with each plus a three shot group and the chrono.

The Varget 5 shot group was 2.83" for five and 2.02" for the best four.

The faster 2400 group was 2.83" for five and 1.83" for the best four.

The front shank of these boolits is .300" x .3025", they are slightly oval and the rifling just engraves a bit on the shank.

Will higher velocity likely help? I'm thinking 1700 to 1850 fps.

Thanks.

the BHN will dictate velocity, as Lee's book tells about....His reloading book is worth getting just for this info....saved me a ton of powder.

I shoot laser cast 170 gr fn boolits (which I crimp a gas check on) at 1950 fps using W748 and get good accuracy in my 30-30's.

I use the LEE 170gr in my Savage 170 pump. 30gr 2206H ( H4895) 2100fps 1 1/2" @ 100 meters. I am very happy with it. It out performs jacks.:drinks:

in the 30-30 i keep my cast loads up with the jacketed ones they seem to shoot equally well.
i have exceeded j-word vels with cast and the accuracy was above the j-words.
37-39 grs of h-414 was/is outstanding in the 94.
