Top punch question... Castpics suggests #430 for 3589, is it the right one for 358009 too? I believe it is, but just to be sure.

Sizing die... If I get just one .35 cal. die waiting for my future project, which one would be the best general size, .359" or .360"? I can make it slightly larger, but don't want to over do that.

Mr Finn,

I have sizers in .3585, .359, .3595, and .360. This is so I can use several mix variations and still have a sizer that will get me close.

Limiting yourself to one sizer is like limiting one's self to one woman. But since you don't have to feed them and they only cost you once, build an assortment or wait until you can measure what you need.

Got the "bug" huh?

Sir John,
Thanks, but I'm not going to buy a collection right now and I guess I'm just asking for good general sizer diameter. One. Too much to buy if I get them all; already got mold for .22 also, tp, sizer (one) and gas checks (like gnat droppings they are). Need to pay the grocery bill also I guess. Since .458 is almost generally undersized for .45 rifle, I 'm leaning towards .359 or .360 with .35. Maybe I pick .359, that will chamber in any rifle or not?. Thanks also for opinion about the women, but I'm limiting myself for one for now; who can stand many of them folks anyway, just can't believe :veryconfu .

Reijuo, Lyman at some time changed all their mould numbers to six digits. #3589 became #358009, so the 430 top punch will fit either. As I use one standard alloy, wheelweights plus 2% tin, I buy sizer dies to be .001" to .002" larger than groove diameter. My .35 Whelen slugs .359, so I size to .360". Complicating the situation is that not every desired size is available. In .35 caliber I believe Lyman makes every size between .355 and .360, in .001" steps. Also, depending on your alloy, a given sizing die may not yield the diameter it is designed for. In the case of my .360 die, it sizes exactly .360 in my alloy. I also have a nominal .356 and a nominal .357, both of which size .357!

Bill,
Oh, it was so simple change, I had an impression that improvements were made on that point, but maybe not so big ones. Well, it seems that Lyman cherries have not been so exactly similar from year to year also when designation stays the same. #430 seems to be available and sizers like you mentioned up to .360, so I think I'm done. Might run in some kind of problems if I ever have money to get barrel form Lothar-Walther, they seem to be dimensioned very tight, but as long as it chambers free I think it's ok. I think L-W don't have standard blanks with 12" twist, only 14", but on custom line there was 12", which can be ordered with contour of choice etc. After few years... Thanks.

Mr. Finn,

Too many to buy?????? This is from Mr. Mechanical? You buy your sizers?

Just one huh? Well, if you get the .358 you can polish it out so that it is round at almost .359. As long as you don't go over 14BHN, it will size .3593 to .3595. At 20 BHN you will get @.360.

Eeh... No, I don't make my dies. Mr. Mechanical ? I went and calibrated few samples for one TRG-shooter here and found one .357 die. Something to work with if nothing else. Enlarging them is not a problem, but I've always screwed up that damn O-ring groove when making them from scratch with finger nail file and jigsaw. So I have to buy them .
