It would be nice if Lloyd could post about it, but I don't know how that would fit with the powers that be over there (not Lloyd). I seem to recall it mentioned (caution, gossip) sometime back that they (I don't know who they is) said this site would fade and die. I'm glad it hasn't, and I don't know why someone would say that.

I am also waiting on 45 2.1 for the final drawing to send Lee. As soon as I get the drawing, I will send the order to Lee. 45 2.1 mentioned in another post that he had some computer problems, so it may be a couple more days until the drawing arrives.

The molds arrived this evening!!!

I cast up a few (20 lbs worth) with one mold to make sure that everything was OK. The alloy I used was straight wheel weights, air cooled. The bullets dropped out of the molds pretty easily. Some of the time all the bullets would drop out when the mold was opened but usually I had to tap the hinge and then they all dropped. I haven't done any "Lee menting". It was at least as good as my better Lee molds.

I measured 12 bullets, two drops from each of the 6 cavities. The bullet measurements are:
Diameter of drive band: .360 to .361
Weight : 108.1 gr to 108.9 grains

The tolerances appear to be within Lee's guarantee and we don't have bullets that are too small! I will mail the molds out on Monday.

Here are a couple photos of the bullets:
http://photos.gunloads.com/images/garandsrus/105grwadcutter2small.jpg

http://photos.gunloads.com/images/garandsrus/105grwadcuttersmall.jpg

The taller bullets are Lee 148gr wad cutters. If anyone wants something else checked before mailing their mold, please let me know...

One problem, there was a piece of paper in with the mould that I don't recognise-- something about six bux? Sorry, can't do anything with that one, so I'll just tear it up.

Quick question, if the Lee CF309-113-RF is a "soupcan", are these "coffeecans"?

Nope, these are mushroom cans:mrgreen:

I got some shot up in one of my model 36's and they shoot good, kept them minute of beer can at 25 yards about 90% of the time. The other ten percent was definately operator error..good little lead saving boolits, I like em.

Please cancel out check #4588 as well. Use it for the next buy !

357maximum, would you mind sharing your load data? I was planning to use 148 WC data and work up, but it looks like you have done the grunt work already.

Sure thing but be careful these are really hot,,,hot like an ice cube.

4.2 grains green dot. Just a pop gun fun load...I shot one over the beta master and it said it was lopping along at 929 fps, 1 3/4 inch barrel. This is one of a pair, and their only duties are plinkin, and the nightstand,(with different ammo at the nightstand of course)

Has anyone in the group buy NOT received their molds? They should have all arrived by now. I would think that the mold going to Canada and Australia should be there by now also.

I still have a couple molds that are available but wanted to hang onto at least one just in case something got lost in transit.

If you don't reply, my assumption will be that your mold arrived! All of the molds were shipped with delivery confirmation so they can be tracked.

Thanks to everyone that made this group buy a success... I am looking forward to shooting the bullets in a PPC league over the winter. I hope to get my first "300" with these!

Thanks again,
John

John,

Thanks for letting me buy one of the extra moulds. I will let you know when it arrives. Perhaps we can meet for coffee at some future date. You will have to come out of the city though, I don't go in unless I have to.

Thanks again,

John,

The mould arrived today and looks great, locks up nice and tight. Pheasants are in rather short supply in some areas around here, however I do know a lot of land owners, this is a real possibility. Thanks again I didn't expect the mould so soon. Lets keep in touch about the birds.

Best,

I have received mine. Don't exactly remember when. Have been out of town. Should have responded sooner. Thanks again for the effort on this one.

Well, I've done some casting of these. First off, this is my first experience with a 6-holer, and it takes some getting used to. I like not having to whack the sprue plate, but I wind up having to tap on the handle bolt to get all my boolits to drop.

My first attempt, I dont' think I got the cavities clean enough, so I had a few that wrinkled every time. I was dropping them into water, and didn't notice on the first run. I'd estimate that 50% of my boolits were rejects. So, I thoroughly re-cleaned the mould, and re-smoked it. This allowed for better fill-out, so that problem was solved. Water-quenching Wheel Weights netted me a boolit in the average range of 107 grains, with a diameter averaging .358. I was casting at around 750 degrees.

I have one cavity that sticks most often--the 3rd from the end usually takes quite a few whacks with the stick to get it to drop, but numbers 3 and 4 drop my best boolits.

My second attempt with air-cooled WW (same batch) were a more consistent 107grains, and a more consistent diameter averaging .360.

I tried placing the pouring holes in the sprue plate flush against the nipple, but this typically gave me hollow spots when the sprue was cut. I found that the best pours were with the mould on an angle, about 1" below the spout, and my tongue held slightly left, between my eye-teeth. I still get some rejects, which seem to form mostly when I don't get a good pour. Anyone have some tricks for working with a 6-holer more consistently?

I was wondering if anyone bothered resizing their boolits, or have been shooting them as-cast? I plan on Tumble Lubing them, but I could size and lube them if I get a sizing die, and top-punch. By the way--what top-punch would work with these?

Anyhow, just thought I'd share my experience so far.

rebliss - check out the "Leementing" article on how to fix the sticky cavity...

Here's a target I shot from sandbags to do some load development. I didn't have the right glasses so I couldn't see the sights clearly, but the load has potential. I used the Lyman cast manual for the 105 Semi Wad Cutter as a starting point. I tried all the W231 recommended loads in .3 gr increments. They all shot well but had a little more recoil than I wanted for this bullet so I am going to drop down a little below the min charge.

These were ACWW "as cast", LLA lubed. The group is just over 1.75 in so this picture is actually enlarged.

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m245/johntlarson/4.jpg

I really like that they cut nice round holes to make the target scoring easy. The reason I didn't like the Lee 105 gr SWC was because it doesn't cut a clean hole. This was a standard 50ft Slow Fire Pistol Target

Those ARE nice, clean holes. I like wadcutters for that reason too. When I shoot my .45 with SWCs in IDPA, I always get comments about the big holes I leave in the targets!

I bought this mould for my wife to practice with her Lady Smith Snubby. What barrel length are you shooting with?

Rebliss,

I have a 6" S&W 686 in .357. I am shooting these in .38 Spec cases of course... The revolver is set up for PPC shooting, where everything is double action so the hammer is bobbed, etc.

Hers is set up similar to yours, except for the snub barrel in stainless steel. I had an action job done, and had the hammer bobbed. Trigger is still standard pull weight. I want her to be able to practice as long as she likes without her hands hurting from firing full-power ammo. I also have some 158gr SWCs for her to shoot to be used to what the full power loads will feel like.

I'm anxious to check out how these shoot through the snub barrel. I hope they don't tumble!

I have gone down as low as 3.0 gr W231 with no problems using LLA... The holes were still nice and sharp in the target with no ripping of the paper.

I may try a little lower, but want to make sure that the bullet gets to where it's going!

Garandsrus--LOL! At first I thought your name was "Grand-a-saurus!" I've got to take more time to read things more closely!

Anyway, when you next go shooting, could you please relay your shooting distance, and an estimate of boolit drop with your 3.0 grains of 231?

How would we go about determining the ballistic coefficient to plug into ballistics programs with this little wadcutter?

Just for fun, I'm posting some basic infomation I got from an online ballistic calculator. Since I have not shot this load personally, I used information others have provided on their powder choice and charge weight. I also estimated the Ballistic Coefficient based on similarly sized wadcutters.

Rebliss,

I will chronograph the 3.0 gr load next time I go shooting and let you know what the velocity is.

Most of the shooting I am going to do with this bullet will be 50ft at indoor PPC matches. I didn't notice much change in point of impace for any of the various powder weights I shot. Of course, the distance was only 50 ft...

Hey John Garandsrus,

How'd your loads chrony? Any other fellows have a load worked up? BOTH of my local shootin' ranges have gone out of business, so I've been a little discouraged lately. Found a new place to shoot, so I finally gotten around to setting up my dies for this one. I'm looking forward to going out and giving it a try!

Rebliss,

I never got around to putting the boolits through the chronograph! I have shot quite a few though at 3.0 gr and 2.9 gr W231. Both shoot great. The 2.9gr load leaves some soot on the case though. I don't think the seal is quite as good as it should be so I have standardized on the 3.0 gr load.

Here's a PPC "A" target I shot with them last week:

http://photos.gunloads.com/images/garandsrus/105grwadcutterppcatarget.jpg

The course of fire was 12 shots in 20 seconds from 21 feet, 6 shots kneeling, 6 shots left hand, left side of the barricade, 6 shots right hand, right side of the barricade, all at 50 feet. I think the time is 90 seconds for the last 18 shots.

I had ordered extra molds to meet the 25 minimum when the order was placed. I still have two that are available if anyone is interested... Same price as the original buy, $58 shipped.

Many Thanks John,

I had the itch but didn't have the scratch when this group buy closed.

I saw several great potentials for it right from the start.

1. I love to help get a female into handgun shooting. Be it for fun, or self defense purposes. I couldn't think of a finer 'lite' bullet to start one out with.

2. I would have wanted this one even at 148 grains. The single lube groove was just the ticket for me. Perhaps I haven't looked long or hard enough for one that only had the single lube groove.

3. It's a 6 banger, nuff said.

4. Wheel weights are getting harder and harder to come by here in my part of the world. (Oklahoma). I had my brother checking Oklahoma City recycler's, scrap yards...et. 35 cents a pound was the best he could find.

PM on the way.

Thanks,

Murphy

garandsrus

Murphy,

The boolit does shoot well... When loaded light the recoil isn't much different than a .22 LR, maybe less.

The single lube groove works well with a Star sizer/luber in that the same lube hole setup works for the .357 Keith group buy also! Just adjust the punch a little.

It is also kind of nice that "every third bollit is a bonus" compared to the 148gr WC.

Got to test these out today. Used the wife's .38 Lady Smith snubby (after all, she's the reason I bought this mould--wanted her to be able to shoot all day and not become recoil sensitive). Tested from 3.6-4.4 grains of Unique in .2 grain increments. The 4.0 load was wonderful. Light recoil, and a ragged hole offhand at 15 feet. This is a winner!
