We all hear about it, some swear by it. Where the heck can I get it???

I know I can order it direct from them or Brownells, but I want to get it locally. Any automotive or hardware stores/franchises carry it.

I tried my local NAPA Auto and will move on to Ace Hdwe.

Anybody try the rust dissolver from Kroil?

I was searching NAPA for Kroil (didn't find it) and accidently came across a product in their catalog called Lucas Gun Oil.
Anybody know anything about it?

It's described as having been developed to withstand the "high combustion tenperatures in machine guns".

I know where I get mine.
I just run over to the place where they make it at lunch and buy my own self a can.

The company used to have a web site listing all of their products.

I'll look for it and amend this post later.

So its ingredients are "proprietary," but at least it's got 2-butoxyethanol in it. That's good old "butyl cellosolve," which is in lots of solvents, inks, paints, thinners, glass cleaners, etc. and isn't generally regarded as highly toxic. It's a main ingredient in some of the old engine top end decarbonizing solvents, like the B12 Chemtool I used on my van a few months back. I wouldn't pour it in a bag and huff it, but I'm not going to lose sleep over smelling it while using it normally.

Here's some info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2-Butoxyethanol

its no wonder he has a handle that starts with Crazy . there are many of them in the USA look how mr O got elected Hey Crazy read a MSDS on asprin
Kano labs on search.
As for gun lube is very good on pistols to keep leading down . you can run a damp patch in the bore let sit over night and the lead will wipe out easy.
the exrust works good The web says a haz-mat but that is only for 5gal or more.
the partez is good too its clear and dont discolor the Al molds. but you have to recoat more offen
NOTE-- the can size if you order from factoy as shipping is going to be about the same get the big cans..

Anyone use Kreen, their fuel/oil additive? I've got a rough-idling vehicle (gasoline engine) with 220k mi that sounds like Kreen might help -- but I'd like to hear of others experience first.

Your thread now returns to its normal programming...

Yeah, I don't think it's crazy, either. See the notes in that Wikipedia link about toxicity. I'm just saying I don't think it's more hazardous than a lot of other solvents we use. This stuff's in Windex.

I read MSDS's as part of my job to see in what way we can and can't use chemicals. I work in the medical field as an Engineer and you would be surprised what people can be sensitive to. How many of you know how many substances when heated cause phosgene gas. I use kroil myself but I also have very good ventilation. The only problem I see is when it is heated too hot. As far as being crazy, that term is relative. I may or may not be crazier than some of the psych patients we have.

Heck, old Testers Plastic Model Glue was worse then that before they reformulated it. Remember before Kenny Rogers was a country singer he was with a rock band and they did the song What Condition My Condition Is In? One line: I woke up this morning, found the sun shining in, found my mind in a brown paper bag, oh I don't know what condition my condition is in.............

Lot's of stuff you could smell in a bag and get high. And nope, this old boy didn't do any of that stupid stuff. Never smoked, never got hooked on alchohol, never did drugs. I didn't jump off the bridge because my friends did.

Y'all know that paraffin is rate as a carcinogen right? Along with most petroleum products.

Leadthrower - If you really want to clean up your injectors and smooth out an idle get 3M Fuel Injecftor cleaner. Adapter hose and fittings for you particular eng make/model about $25. This stuff is unbelievable. Have seen it change a roough running, almost stalling engine into one running so smooth you put a glass of water on the air cleaner.

Gents do yourself a favor...make up a Gallon batch of Ed's Red and add a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO). You can make it by the gallon CHEAP, and there just isn't any better product you can buy. Search for threads on Ed's Red for discussion by many folks who frequest the Boolits page.

Ed's Red Basic: Equal parts: Mineral Spirits, Kerosene, Acetone, Dexron 2 ATF.
Note: The Acetone makes this mixture an aggressive solvent which can readily harm some traditional wood finishes on stocks, so be warned and be careful with use. ER works as well without Acetone, but more slowly.
My addition: an equal measure of Marvel Mystery Oil
The addition of Marvel Mystery Oil makes a HUGE difference regarding residual lubricity and MMO has many solvent qualities on it's own.

The ER/MMO mixture is a better penetrant, solvent, rust loosner & preventer, squeak eliminator, with residual lbricant than anything you can buy, including Kroil, WD40, Liquid Wrench, or whatever whatcha-got on your bench.

With regular use, along with normal good cast bullet practices, this mix has eliminated any leading in all my pistol and rifle calibers and made routine cleaning a breeze.
( I hesitate to add that along with some clover compound and scraping with gas checks, it made a pretty nasty bore in a 1893 Marlin a reasonable shooter with BHN 21+ gas checked
.311 Ranch Dog, Lyman, and Seaco boolits...)

On a different subject, for long term storage bore (or other metal) protection I've found nothing better than a very dilute (between 1:5 and 1:10) LLA/mineral spirits combination on a bore mop. After 24 hours dry time it becomes a very thin, a factory like protective coat of LLA, easily cleaned (like a new gun) when you want to return your hardware to sevice.
The same very thin mixture is terrific for initial bore conditioning... guaranteed no leading.
Or you can clean it out with the ER or ER/MMO mixture above.
Try it...you won't be sorry.
Cheers.

MMO by itself is a fine gun cleaner and lubricant. I've used it a lot.

I missed this thread addition. Great points. Joe are you aware that Coleman lantern mantles if sold today, or 1985, would need 5' of air space in the packaging to isolate the radioactivity? It is a good idea to read the MSDS for everything we use but to understand the meaning of the terms also.

Ricochet

They still sell Coleman lantern mantles, but they no longer contain thorium. I don't think they light as well or hold up as well as the old ones.

Read a test recently on penetrating oils and the best of all beating even kroil was a 50/50 mix of acetone and ATF.

No wonder Ed's Red is so effective.

I read the same report--the 1:1 mix of acetone and ATF beat kroil by even a GOOD margin.

That was music to my eyes as I've got a project starting next year with a boat that I'm going to need a lot of penetrating oil that will do the job.
